Caught the first buck on camera in daylight on the parents place. Little guy around 845 am. Does and fawns went through at 8. Does moved w to e and buck was n to s on a ne wind. The stand I have there...does probably would've winded me.
I put a two man ladder stand up in a big maple tree that has a split trunk. There is big Scotch pine for also. It’s a ol man 18 foot ladder stand. It doesn’t have a stabilizer bar that goes from the ladder to the tree. There is a center stabilizer strap that goes to the ladder truss. Here is the thing…it flexes a bit to much toward the tree when you climb the ladder. I just bought a 6 foot length of angle iron that had attachment holes through out it. My idea was to lag Screw it to the tree and then attach the angle iron with a bolt to ladder truss. Any reason not to do this?
Sounds like a solid plan to me… you have lifelines for all your ladders? Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I have life lines on all my hang ons. I am debating on using them on the ladder stands, I usually just hook in when I get to the top.
We have this debate all the time about safety lines with ladder stands. IMO, follow standard 3 points of contact safety rule on ladders. I am on a ladder around the house and at my rentals a dozen times a year. I don't have a safety line while climbing those. Why should I have one on a ladder deer stand?
That’s my thinking. I feel like at what point is the risk negligible. On my hang on sets, sticks ..limbs Ect Ect …I use them but on the ladder stands I don’t. I am open to having my mind changed..
Most my ladders are in huge cedar trees. I really cram them in there. Sometimes it has taken my a few hours just to get them in. I am not sure you could even get them back out of there after the 3rd year short of almost cutting the tree down. If I fall, I am sure I would be completely hung up in the cedar long before I ever hit the ground.
Please put them on your ladders… it was a ladder that came loose when I was about to hook up and I fell 15’ and fractured my back in 4 places , broke my collarbone and shoulder blade and had a brain bleed Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I agree, hooking up that first ratchet strap is the hairiest moment in hanging any stand. I am sorry to hear about your accident and super happy that your recovered. Though I am Sure you still suffer from those injuries. I will take that to heart and hang a safe line on each stand in NY, I have some down in my shop to can dig out. Thanks Tony
I also release tension on my straps every year and reapply. Most my stand have 4+ straps as I add and never take off of anything is sketchy.... they don't cost that much. Be safe boys Sent from my Pixel 6 using Tapatalk
I am adding life lines to ladder stands. Hopefully I get the new stabilizer bar finished and put it out on the two man ladder, I will take some pictures. My son has me running ragged with two soccer games to day. He started a 7th grader in JV and played 50 minute as midfielder this morning, had a goal and two assists before they gave him rest the last 10 minutes. Tonight he plays under the lights on his U14 club team in their first game. He better have some legs on him
Another day of table building. I’m getting close. Another 3-4 hours to finish constructing it and maybe 3-4 to sand it all down and prep it for finisher. This better get me some brownie points!! New crossbow didn’t show today Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Thanks. It’s gonna be amazing when it’s done. I have enough mahogany left to build another one. I may do that and try to sell it. My brother just informed me that I may be able to get in with his group next year to hunt elk in Idaho. This would be a great way to get the money for that without having the wife complain about spending 5-6 g for a hunt. She doesn’t understand my need to do these types of things. Looks awesome, bro! I may be a buyer if you do another one Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I’ll keep that in mind.If I get the chance to elk hunt next year I will be busy with side jobs and this type of stuff to pay for it. I’ll do whatever it takes if the opportunity comes around. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Drizzling rain and pretty cool temps today with a high around 72. So it's time to get in some still huntin/scouting over on the mountain. I have to go basically straight up the side of the mountain. I'm having lunch with the family and then I'll head that way later. Probably end up wet and empty handed.
It's hot here too 68° and I have no plans to get back in the woods until Oct 1. I just started a batch of jerky and plan on vacuuming my pool one more time for the year ( it's 65°) it's not horrible but not pleasant. Then mow and I'm cool for the day. There is a tree down in a patch but I'm not sure if the Stihl is coming out or not yet. Sent from my Pixel 6 using Tapatalk
