I'm glad I hunted the opener so I could remember how much of a reality check it brings. I've only had good early season hunts a handful of times, and those were Sept 21st (buck that kept showing up right at a stand location and camera) and a doe last year on Sept 25. They were hitting some regenerative growth on the regular. Point is I don't have anything patterned nor any real draw for deer right now. Still won't keep me from going back out tho. Waiting patiently for a late October cold front in Missouri now. Lol.

I’ve always been lucky when it comes to early season hunts. Well, last season the early sits sucked because of a combination of insanely hot weather and a bet I made with someone.

When I lived in Tennessee I was lucky enough to have a natural funnel on my three acre property.

Where I live now is 10 acres but it’s a relatively narrow strip that starts at the bottom on one side of a ridge and goes to the bottom of the other side. The east side of the ridge is a really good travel corridor.

I just washed all of my early season clothing and I’ll spray it all down with permethrin tomorrow. I treat everything I wear except my skivvies. I used to treat those too.

I just remembered that it’s supposed to be 52 degrees Friday morning. That’s going to feel cold sitting in a tree since I’m still used to warm weather. I guess I’d better wash a few light layers also.

A specific, former SEAL. David Goggins. He talks about this in several videos meant to inspire people. I personally think it is over the top, but you can't argue with the dudes work ethic and his story is pretty amazing.

I’ll have to check that out. When I read what you wrote a mental image of SEAL candidates carrying boats and logs popped into my mind.

I was planning to spray permethrin on all my gear today but it’s raining. Instead I got my pack loaded and organized, waxed the string on my bow, replaced the stabilizer with my Tactacam and put six brand new scary sharp Slick Trick Magnums on my arrows and made sure they all spun perfectly.

Once I get my clothes treated all that remains is to wait for Friday morning.

Well, I do need to sneak across the road and put a Viper on a tree but for that I’m waiting until it’s close enough for me to get a somewhat reliable wind forecast from the lying Weather Channel app I have.

It’ll feel better Thursday evening, but yeah, it’s pretty nice.

Also, I kind of like the idea of getting in there and not knowing what to expect since I haven’t been running cameras.

That was so fun on opening day not having any intel of what to expect! Made it a whole new game

It's starting to feel more like fall here and I am starting to get the fever! Walked some WIHA ( leased land to the state) yesterday. I bet I checked 50 oak trees in 3 different spots. Even the oldest most mature oaks only had a handful of acorns I could see. My consensus is no acorn crop this year to speak of due to the dry conditions. This means I will be paying much more attention to water sources and row crops.

It definitely feels like fall here. Dreary with a high of 73. Our acorns are...ok this year. Last year was a ridiculous year for them. Never recall a year with so many acorns on the ground.

We still have some days forecasted for the high 80s left in Sept. Fortunately it starts to cool off pretty fast when the sun starts to set. Nothing worse than hot muggy nights. Had a half inch of rain yesterday and there is more in the forecast. Should know if my food plots are hosed or not in the next 10 days.

I haven't checked our extended forecast, but I'm sure we have some 80+ degree days still ahead of us here. I sure am looking forward to 50 degrees Friday morning in the tree though.

The wind forecast right now is a NNE wind which is perfect for where I'd like to sit, but it's also calling for "light and variable". I don't know about you, but what a light and variable wind always means for me is that a light wind is going to "vary" straight to the nose of the nearest deer.

We have decent red oak crop, not great but just okay… white oaks are poor to fair at best. They are still on the ground and will be around for the opener. With all the rain we have the deer are still on the green and early apples

I’m definitely going to be getting in on this. They have 2 down out of 4 guys. 3 days to hunt yet. They are really into them just had to wait for the right shot. Multiple bulls in range. Sounds freaking amazing
