A couple of weeks ago some of you helped me with my decision on a rest. Thanks for all of your input. It is very clear to me that I will not be buying a new bow or even a new used bow this year due to slow business. I do however want to dress up my old bow. I have decided on the Quad Ultra HD for my rest. I have a few questions on a couple of sights and peeps for any willing to listen and answer. I like the brightness of the Cobra and Extreme sights that I have seen in person (leaning towards Extreme). I do not have the opportunity to see very many in person as I only have D***s Sporting Goods and 1 bow/gun/fishing shop in the area and that one has only one small corner in the back dedicated to archery I am trying not to spend more than around $90 or so on the sights. I want them to be easy to adjust, bright and pretty durable. I like .029 pins and only need 3 or 4 pins. Believe it or not mine is an old HHA sight that is still rectangle in shape...remember those?? I was just wondering if any of you have used either of these brands and if you liked or not?? Next and last I want a larger peep. I want to go up to 1/4" and I was thinking of the Meta or Tru. The only thing I was hesitant on the Meta is the color and is it shiny? Is that a glossy finish and will it have a glare? I know it may be a little lighter in weight but will that really matter all that much? I am kind of leaning more towards the Tru or perhaps even the R.A.D. Super deuce that looks like the Meta in shape but looks like it would not give off a glare. Mine is an old Shurz that splits the string into 3 bundles and is served into the string. I don't like it anymore. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks
Wolfpack, The G-5 meta peep gives off no glare that I've ever experienced and the amount you can see is impressive. I've had several styles of peeps and settled on the Meta about 2 yrs ago and like it.
I can't help much on a sight because I plan to switch from an old tru glo to the NXS Bowsight when it is released latter this spring. But I did just switch to the G% Meta Peep and it is GREAT. No glare that I've experienced and it has been easier to shoot in lower light (I assume because of the color).
Never been a fan of the G5 peeps. The color throws me off. RAD and Tru are very similar. I have been shooting Tru peeps for as long as I rememeber. For hunting, I recommend the 7/32. IT's plenty big without over doing it. Remember, you want your peep to fit just around your sight housing, any more is not necessary IMO. Good luck. I can't help ya much on the sight. I don't think I could ever go back to .29 pins. .019 is perfect for hunting IMO. I am a huge Viper fan, durable quality. If I were in the market for something under 90, I'd be looking for an ebay/AT viper pro 2000, but you should also check out the apex sights. I saw one at Gander this past week with 3 .019 pins and a light for like 50 bucks. I may pick it up for my father in law's bow.
Thanks guys for your input. Ben: I took a look at the sights on the Viper website. They look pretty good and the H series looks very similar (at least to me) to the Extreme sights and even the Pro looks similar to the Extreme 1000 sight with the detach dovetail mount. Who sells them? I would be willing to go higher than $100 IF it is really worth it but I'm not willing to go to the $200 range like a couple of the Spot Hoggs w/ wraps. Just curious, in your opinion are the .029 pins too large and take up too much of your "sight window" when focusing on a deer in low light conditions? I have .019's now on my 10 yr. old HHA sight but the .029's that I see in some of the stores just look so much brighter? I have always just gone by the old saying "if it aint broke....". I'm still hunting with my original setup that I bought 10 yrs. ago when I wasn't sure if I would like bowhunting or how much I would bowhunt instead of gun. My equipment has never failed me yet(knock on wood)and I have never missed or put a bad shot on a deer BECAUSE of equipment but i think I'm just ready to upgrade a little and these newer items can be put on a new bow someday because I definitely hunt WAY more with my bow than I do with guns now.
Wolf, I heard someone say that they sanded down the G5 meta peep's outer rings to eliminate its shiny appearance. However, they left the inner circle original. I just thought I would share this with you. I will be putting the G5 peep (Hunter 3/16) on my new bow, but I am going to leave it alone. Good Luck!!
Ben- Thanks for the site info. I remember Dan from the other site. I like the look of one of the H series Viper sights and also the NXS sight as well. As I said before I have never hunted with .029 pins(mine has.019 pins) but they do look brighter in the stores...what is it that you do not like about this size(.029) for hunting? 546- Thanks for the heads up but I think I will probably go with the TRU or the RAD. GABowhunter- I like the looks of the NXS. How does the magnetic cover work and have you seen one in person? If you go to the site that Ben gave me, Dan has them in stock now for $169.99 free shipping, if you are looking to buy now.
I'm actually switching from .29 to .19 pins. But that is due to my eyesight. The .29's blurr out a bit, so I'm hoping that the .19s are a little clearer. I do have a light attached, and that will help w/any light issues.
I would advise against spending money on a new sight, until you can get a Spott Hog Hog It or Hunter. Best $ I ever spent on a sight. It was worth the wait. I got mine in .010 with a wrap kit. You may also look at Motanna Black Gold sights (Inferno). I tried the inexpensive route. Wait 'til you can step all the way up.
P.S. I also got the Spott Hog Whammey. High speed photography compairs support times of various type rests. In this case, longer support is better. The choice of peep diameter should be based on your shooting/hunting conditions. With full sun and open terrain a smaller diameter peep will be more accurate than a large. Under low light/heavy cover a larger hole will pass light better (if you can't see it, you can't hit it). I like flat black. I wish I could ditch the blasted tubing though. It's another place for equipment failure.
wolfpack from what I've read and the videos I've watched the hood when off is suppose to increase the brightness of the pins however if during the day the pins get to bright you can put the hood back on and it will cause them to dim. no I've not seen one yet and its the main reason I'm not in a hurry to buy it. I'd like to either see it in the pro shop or sportmans here or at buck-a-rama in the summer before I purchase it. I wonder how he has it in stock already. An email I got from bowtech said it wouldnt be out until the end of spring.
I don't know?? I did not speak to Dan only read the ad and it said "in stock"?? I am like you, I like to actually "see" something before I buy especially something in that price range. That is the problem around here, what you can "see" is VERY limited. Thanks for the info. on the hood. I was confused because the ad I read used the words "turned on" when talking about the light cover?? My chances of seeing one in person will probably be very slim unless I happen to see one on someone elses bow
