Oh nice, there is some pretty good hunting over there I bet, little more rural than this area, I hunt the sgl's near and around Lackawana state park. Usually #307 or #300 Edit: Nevermind, I forgot how close Wilkes-Barre is to that area
The public ground that is close to me can be kinda tricky. It's cut up by roads so you are never more than 1/2 mile from a road. I've had a couple situations. The first one, I scouted and checked out a spot that looked good. I came in from the back side, found good sign and picked a tree out. Came back and hung and set that next evening. About 5pm and I see movement. It was a hunter coming to the timber from an inside corner further down than I had scouted and climbed up into a stand about 80 yards away. I could see him and he could see me. I ended up killing a 138" 3pt that night. After the dark, he got down and came of the find out what I had shot because he never heard or seen the deer that had to have walked past him within 60 yards. He just heard the shot and saw the deer running away. The other hunter was great, even helped me blood trail. Didn't offer to help drag him out though. LOL I let him know that I didn't see his stand while scouting and that I had thought about getting down when I saw him come in, but I didn't want to ruin his hunt by me making a bunch of noise taking the stand down and backing out. He was totally cool. The second time, I had scouted a field edge. Came back and hung about a week later. I was in the process of hanging my stand when two guys come by dragging a doe. The saw me and with disgust told me they had a stand on this field(It was about 80 yards away). I was just about done hanging and let them know that I was only planning on hunting that set after work on weekdays. I had waited until about noon to head in and hang the set, figuring that would be the time when I wouldn't disturb anyone. That stand, even though it was cable locked on to the tree, came up missing a couple weeks later. I guess they wanted that spot more than me.
"I ended up killing a 138" 3pt that night.” Is this a typo? If not, I’d love to see that 3 pt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I guess 100 yards is about par depending on terrain. Now I have hunted with my brother before in the rut and he was close enough to hear me say mehhhh lol. But then again we knew each other and set up accordingly for wind in respect to both of us.
Respectably I would say nobody in sight. Realistically I would expect anyone to do anything on public land. Last spring had two Arkansas guys park by my truck, sneak past me without knowing I was there (they assumed I was in the fields below) and proceed to shoot the gobbler I roosted right off the limb before sunrise. If you dont have the right attitude you will get pissed off pretty quick on public land. Just go with the flow and don't get mad at anyone unless they've really done a bad one.
Here on public land you take a cigarette out and the guy in the tree next to you will light it for you. I just had someone set up a stand about 50 yards from one of mine. Fair warning. I drink a lot of coffee and I'll let it fly from the stand. If you don't like the show turn away.
Thanks all for the input. I have yet to have anybody set up closer than 100 yards but have had multiple people walk through while I was hunting. Where are you from @catman529? I had a landowner close to some public that let's me hunt every once in a while call me freaking out 2 years ago. She said someone had shot early in the morning down on their property come to find out it was 2 Arkansas boys I had run into on that public earlier in the season. Supposedly they were told by the neighboring landowner that it was his property. I know that land owner as well and he never said that to them. She was dissapointed because I was supposed to turkey hunt the next morning and they had shot a big tom. I still hunted and ended up doubling with my ten gauge on 2 long beards.
I go the other way most times #57 area and Rickets. Slocum for the short hunts as I'm 6 minutes away from it.
I'm in Tennessee. I don't mean to talk bad about Arkansas hunters, I've met a few guys who were as good as anyone, but a lot of those boys who come over here to turkey hunt are selfish POS. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
