[h=2]Before you buy Remington 700 check this link. http://www.usatoday.com/money/indust...ger-cnbc_N.htm Saw this a while back on History Channel but blew it off. The Military Snipers have known about abrupt firings for years when the safety is released without pulling the trigger. A friend's son in law was killed Saturday while pulling his rifle into his tree stand. A limb evidently knocked the safety off and the gun fired, killing him in his stand. Why he had it pointed toward himself while pulling it up and why it was already loaded, we don't know but hunter's need to know this about the 700. [/h]
I to have watch it on the history channel several times. I have also watch and read all the documentation Remington put together in response to the inquiries. I am still skeptical there is really an issue at all. Military service, specifically snipers often modify their guns. Even if Remington denied the issue I believe they would have changed the design if there was any doubt. As for your friends son-n-law that that is just terrible. Was the safety really ever on? How can anyone be certain? Who is to say that the trigger didn't get caught on a branch on the way down? We'll never know for certain...... I owned x2 700s. I have complete faith they are a safe rifle.
Of course there were no witnesses and I can't imagine why he would have: #1. had the gun pointing toward himself and #2. been pulling up a loaded gun. All I know is it is a senseless death and a huge reminder for all of us to be careful. I watched a youtube report that another member submitted and evidently the military issue was that some of the troops were making some unauthorized modifications to their sniper rifles. They were ordered to cease all DIY modifications.
Get the trigger to lite and they'll fire every time you take it off safe. Sorry ot hear about your friend. But you can't blame the rifle.
I don't... he obviously did some very wrong things, just wished we could have all learned an easy lesson an easier way....thanks.
Although I love my 700, which was passed down from my grandfather and grandmother, I had this happen to me a couple years back hunting antelope in Wyoming. At the time I had no idea why it happened and was pretty lucky for that matter. After cleaning out my underwear I brushed it off as operator error. However, after seeing this thread I know feel a little better that it wasnt me that made a mistake but actually the rifle...and I agree that they are the best for the price...
I have a highly modified Remington 700 that I hunt with and target shoot with. I have never had any problems with it. As was said by another poster here in this thread, I have complete faith in my 700. I've beat it up and dragged it through some pretty rough stuff and it still functions flawlessly! I wouldn't trust my hunt to anything else. My wife and I both shoot a Remington 700 and they both function superbly!!
I watched a gunsmith pull a 700 off the shelf, no modifications, and click the safety 10 times. Of the 10 times that rifle snapped twice. Always keep gun safety in mind because you just don’t know.
Sorry about your friend's son-in-law. I hate when stuff like that happens. I also hate seeing such a great gun get a bad reputation. My dad and brother have 700s and I love them things. I plan on buying one in the future. People really put too much faith in their guns. You gotta think safety first no matter what weapon you're using.
I agree that just because it is called a safety does not mean you should have any trust in it at all.
