It is heavy if you do any amount of hiking during your hunt. I say you can't go wrong with a 870 super mag!

Every barrel shoots ammo differently. You may want to try Federal ammo with flight control, FC. It's recommended to shoot this with a choke that IS NOT ported or has a wad stopper. Try shooting #5s or #6s with your full choke and see what happens. The flight control has a wad that holds the bbs together...it kind of does the work of a choke. That wad will travel over 40 yards!

Are you shooting a 12 gauge with 3.5 inch shells?

As was stated, the 11-87 is heavy. Great gun though. I chose an 870 for my dedicated turkey gun. I believe the barrels have the same overbore, so choke/load combos should perform at least close to similar. I played with a LOT of loads/chokes, and ended up with an Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike .665, along with Hevi 13 3.5" 2.25oz #6's. I'm putting between 190-210 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards pretty consistently, and have had several 40-50 yard bang flops with it.

i use an 1187 synthetic stock with a 28" barrel
a tru glo tg170x choke and shoot remington nitro turkey 5 shot. its good out to about 45 or 50 yards.
since I use it I can say that it is not to heavy for me.
but I use a sling just like on my bow.
its also a great bird gun.

This is an old Thread but I'm new so...I have an 1187. I have had it for 20 some-odd years. I have taken more game with that gun that any other weapon I have. Lost count of the dove, deer, and ducks. It has only failed me one time. The very first time I pulled the trigger it jammed, I made a rookie mistake, I didnt oil it before shooting it the first time.
My first turkey was taken with it, 48 steps, 19 lbs. 9 ozs. 10 1/2 beard 1 1/4 spurs.
I also have a slug barrel for it. I take it hog hunting as back-up and I use a sling for carrying it.
