can any of you remember your first time hunting and the things you were nervous about:confused: im taking a first time hunter with me this weekend to WI and i know that they are a bit nervous...i just want to do everythng in my power to make this an enjoyable experience. (did i mention that the weather calls for rain thurs, fri and sat?)lastly this is really my only "big" hunt of the year that my job allows me to have any time. after this just get to sit here and there maybe for 3 hrs at a time.i say this because the person im taking knows this and is worried about "messing up" and spoiling my trip. all i can think is to stay as positive as possible... HELP:bash:

I was nervous about getting 'buck fever'... so nervous in fact that I passed on a BIG 10pt (probably woulda scored about 140ish) cuz I didn't get an absolute perfect broadside shot at it, in retrospect I had several decent shots (rifle season in northern WI) and I just passed on 'em cuz I was STUPID... still to this day I'm kickin myself in the AZZ over it... biggest deer I've ever had in my sights by a LONG shot... by the way, it woulda only been about a 70-80yd shot with my rifle... ended up takin a young buck, small 6pt... smallest deer i've ever taken so far...

thanks for makin me bring that one up... now I'm on a mission!!! ARGH!!!

I was 12 and the first deer I had come to me I pulled back my bow dont rememeber aiming letting the arrow go or anything just I missed and it ran off. I must of had buck fever so bad I blanked out LOL!!! I'll never forget it and to this day it was one of the most exciteing things that I can rememeber. I WAS HOOKED!!! We didnt have very many deer back in those days and just to see one was rare. I still hunt in that same spot every now and then.

I don't think I can remember the first time I actually went hunting, but I definatly remember the first deer I shot at with a bow.

I had a doe at 10 yards. I was watching it, and next thing I knew I was at full draw! I honestly don't remember aiming or anything. I sent a Easton 2316 (log of an arrow) right over her back and she ran off. I was so shaken up I just had to sit in the stand collect myself the rest of the morning.....Good times:d

If the first timer is really that nervous just let them know there is nothing to worry about. Otherwise let them soak up every bit of that excitement. I know I wouldn't have had it any other way...excpet maybe not miss:d

Being nervous is part of the fun. Just let him know that as long as he doesn't stand up and scream in his stand there's nothing to mess up! My first time out was 28 years ago and I actually climbed 6 feet up a tree with my recurve and 1 arrow! Damned if I didn't get a shot at a little 6 point and launched it right over his back. The amazing adrenaline dump afterward hooked me for life. Have fun and don't worry about the rain.

Here is an article about my 1st childhood deer hunt... Don't know if it will help you, but its a good one.

    The Backyard Buck
    By Dan Infalt

Some of my fondest memories come from my childhood. When I was 8 years old, I wanted to go deer hunting with my older brother, Bob in the worst way. He was my idol. Every Thanksgiving week he would travel to Black River Falls and come back with a little buck that seemed like a huge trophy to a young boy. He would tell me stories for hours about everything that happened.

Bob once again headed away to a place I only knew as “Up North.†I really wanted to go bad, but Dad said I was too young and needed to have patience until I was old enough.

Dad was a smart man. The north woods was no place for a child who was addicted to adventure. However Dad felt sorry for the boy in the driveway kicking stones. After the hunters left, he bought me a little gift... a small, red, Fred Bear fiberglass toy bow with a couple of wooden arrows with field tips. He said, "Why don't you practice hunting with this 'til your old enough to go with Bob?" All I could think was Bob will sure be impressed when he comes home and sees the big trophy buck I am going to shoot with my new bow!

I practiced shooting every tin can I could find, imagining the cans being big bucks or charging bears. Then I started stalking the woodlots and fields around my Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin house looking for real bucks and bears. I saw a couple deer but was frustrated when every stalk was busted and the deer would just run off.

Suddenly I was faced with the last day of the nine day deer season. Dad told me Bob had called to say he got a buck and was on his way home. I had to give it one last try. I took my toy bow out for the last hunt. This time I took my dog, Beuford, along. He would help me find a buck.

I crawled through some brush into an opening in a thick overgrown field. As I stood, I was face to face with a buck staring back from about 10 feet away! Beuford circled the buck and went at it from behind while I just stood in shock staring at the buck who was staring at me. As the dog came up on the bucks rear, the animal lunged forward and ran right over the top of me. One of his antlers caught my jacket ripping it as I slammed to the ground. As he jumped over me a hoof rammed into my guts leaving a large muddy track. By the time I got back to my feet, the mighty buck was gone, never to be seen again. That's when the tears started.

My neighbor, Mrs. Martin, came to my rescue after witnessing the event from her porch. She could not cross a river that separated us, so she called my Dad who came running out to make sure I was not hurt.

    "Are you OK?" he hollered.

I said "Yes" in between my moaning cry's.

He said, "Then why you cryin?"

I said, "Cuz I didn't get the buck!"

I was waiting at the door when Bob got home. "Look at the track on my jacket, Bob!" I was now part of the club...I had my own hunting story! The next week the story appeared in the Milwaukee Journal and word of "the boy who got run over by a buck" story started to spread.

That was over 30 years ago, and I am still getting even with the bucks!

Rained the first day, but we sat all 13.5 hrs!!! weather go better as the day went on but didnt see anything. my first-timer did well but about at 1500 started asking, "how much longer?" second day i suggested a two part sit for her. so she sat till about 930 got down and walked back to the house. she came back out at about 1530 and sat the rest of the day. saw a ton of turkeys but no deer until we climbed off the stand at night... yesterday it was more windy than sat, but we had agreed to only stil till 1030 and get down. all is all it wasnt too bad, kinda sucks that she didnt see anything though... well thats why we call it hunting and not shooting!! hate to say this but i'll get a chance to sit on thanksgiving and xmas and that'll be it for me for the rest of the yr:cry: i'll post some pics of the hunt later. thanks for all the suggestions and stories yall:cool:
