Any of you guys back in the day race BMX or just had a cool BMX bike? Mine was a Race Inc. and then I bought a National Pro that had Tuff Wheels. I used to race BMX but never was that great. What are some of your experiences?
I think my first was a Huffy, but my two favorites were a PK Ripper and Mongoose back in the early 80's. Never raced just crashed a lot on homemade ramps.
X2. Same here but late 70's. five spoke wheels and we would make up ramps to jump and see if we could do 360's. lot of broken wheels and road rash.
I had a haro cosmo. We built more dirt jumps than you could imagine. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
I saw that some PK Rippers can go for a few thousand dollars these days. The days spent in the woods and fields with lawnmowers clearing out brush just to make are own track. Ah Memories! Trying to "tableTop" and "Bunny Hops". And ad In the road rash!
Never had a BMX, started out with a Schwinn Deluxe Hornet from 1960 that my dad bought used for me to deliver newspapers with in 1966 for $50 (which was a crapload of money then). It was a gold in color 2 speed bicycle with the shock absorber mounted between the front forks and the frame by the handlebars. I have no idea what happened to that bicycle.... That bike could get up good speed. Remember one time I was flying down the street and when I reached the intersection a car pulled out in front of me. I swerved trying to miss the car but T-boned him in the rear quarter panel. The forward momentum hurled me over the trunk into someone's front lawn. I was knocked unconscious for a few moments, the bike was scratched a little, the car ended up with a dent, and the driver of the car was unscathed. The driver was at fault and he paid to have the bike repainted and for my checkup at a local hospital.
I had a Mongoose. Some friends and I built a b*tchin dirt track in the woods at the end of my street. God, I miss those days!!
I rode a Raleigh for the longest time. I broke a Redline and. Haro frame along the way. All the kids in my neighborhood chipped in to build trails in the woods under the powerline easement. There were trails and jumps all over the place, and we spent untold hours out there with shovel in hand. I only got to go to the real track a couple times a year when I was a kid. I never was too fantastic at racing. When I was in my early 20's, I started riding bikes again. Mostly MTB: some trialsin, XC and downhill. I raced XC in singlespeed class. Somewhere along the way, I got talked into riding some skatepark, man was that fun! I still have my Mosh park bike (need to get it sold). I went to the track a little and raced a cruiser against all the dads. That was pretty fun. I hung all that up when my daughter was young. I could not afford an injury that would keep me away from work. All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure - Mark Twain
I had a Mongoose with the tuff wheels and I built a track in my back yard. I had a barrel jump and a pit jump broke my arm on the pit...Man those were the days
I had a few different bikes, nothing spectacular. I never raced anything but man I could ride a sweet wheelie for miles if I wanted to. I couldn't tell you how many plywood ramps we built as kids, and how many skinned elbows I had. I still remember my mother picking gravel out of my head with tweezers one time when I wiped out on a dirt road hill, I must have been going 40+ mph when I lost it. The other day my wife and I were talking about kids and bike helmets. I told her that somehow they were never necessary when I was a kid and now there are places where it's the law. Seems a little overkill to me, how are kids supposed to get tough without a few bumps and bruises along the way?
I had a sweet Mongoose. Can't remember what model or anything. I just loved the pegs and "gooseneck" so that you could spin the handlebars all the way around without the brake cables getting caught. I mainly grew skateboarding though. :D
I never raced but I did get a hand me down spyder that my stepbrother had raced. I was a skater, roller skater that is.:D My uncle ran the rink and I started when I was 4. Still skated all the way through high school and beyond. sent from my samsung note 2
If i have to admit, I used to skateboard back in middle school. Spent quite a bit on my board never used it after middle school. Still have it someplace. We used to ride bikes all the time and go off jumps always trying to do something cool but most of the time we ended up on the dirt after the jump.
I had a gt and a redline. Never raced either but bike status was big. I was just looking on ebay recently and there were a lot of old school bikes on there.
