Yesterday was the last day of doe season on my east Texas lease. I had passed on a couple of does earlier in the week hoping they might be leading a buck around. Well with the freezer still empty for the year I decided I would kill one over the weekend given the opportunity. The opportunity presented itself Sunday mornng. I was in a stand I placed overlooking a creek crossing. I was pleased to see an active scrape about 7 yds from the stand when I had enough light to see. At about 8:15 a lone doe approached the creek heading straight to me. She crossed and started up the trail giving me a 15 yd broadside shot. As I drew the Marquis something happened. I was about half way draw when I heard a loud snap. My bow fired, the arrow sailing to a distance about 6 yds shy of the doe. She looked up at me, blew, and ran like there was no tomorrow. I'm standing there thinking WTF?! Upon inspection the caliper jaw of my Cobra Mamba R-1 was missing. I have no idea how this failure happened. I drew the bow in the dark upon getting settled in the stand just like I do every time I hunt. No problem then. I intend to write a e-mail to Cobra sometime today. after I calmed down a bit I dug in my pack for my back up release, a Carter loop-master. I continued my all day sit and saw more deer but never had another shot opportunity. I don't think I'll be using a Cobra release again. And now if I want to kill a doe I'll be heading to west Texas to get that done.
dang! i often stress about my release because it tends to get banged around quite a bit... luv the fact that you have a back-up!!!!!! first thing im gonna buy this week is an additional release! good luck the rest of the season!
