Well guys, this past Friday I got a wild hair and said to myself, "Self, I don't think I'll have very many weekends coming up in the next couple of months to get our floors redone." So I decided I'm sanding down my living room floor and ripping the carpet up in the dining room and sanding the wood floor underneath it as well. I can't stand carpet in the dining room so when we bought our home last year I knew it was going. I rented a floor sander and edger and went to town removing the old varnish. Put 2 coats of gunstock stain and 2 coats of water based polyurethane and it looks pretty money now. I did this entire project for right under 200 bucks. Far less money than my initial plan of adding a floating floor. I'm far from an expert but I think for my first time it turned out pretty good. The wife loves it so if she's happy so am I.
As you can see the floor closest to where I took the picture is the dining room where I ripped up the carpet. It had paint marks on it and raised nails. In the living room you can also see where the old varnish was starting to flake up.

My bro taking a hack at sanding down the floor. It was his first time as well.

The finished results of sanding. I almost decided to leave it as is and just put down some high gloss polyurethane but the wifey wanted the floors to be darker.

Putting down the 1st coat of "gunstock"stain.

After the 1st coat of polyurethane.

Finished results and finally getting the furniture back in from the garage. I haven't put the fish tank or dining room table back in yet. I want the floor to cure a little longer. Overall, it turned out well.

    Looks great.

But, I figured you'd just have your wife do it......while you were hunting.

    (j/k.........................................kinda)

Actually, I did this and watched Avalyn while she was playing in a weekend corporate challenge softball tournament. That's how we operate.

    Looks great!

I did mine almost 3 years ago, had to do it all in one weekend before we moved in. The big sander is the easiest part, the edger unit is such a PITA, and might be the loudest power tool on the planet.

The edger can easily kick your ass if you're not prepared for it. I had ear plugs in but it still was a very loud piece of machinery.

Well done! My kitchen/dining room floors need refinishing in a bad way. I just keep telling my wife I'll do them after I tag out this fall......or after the season ends. :D

That's exactly why I did them before I start hitting it hard this fall. I wanted the nicer weather. It would've been a huge pain in the arse to wait until after the season. Maybe you'll get lucky and tag out when the weather is still decent!

    Very nice!

I once sanded down my living floor..... with a hand held belt sander. Works pretty good - until you space out for a second.
Maple floors too so it didn't take much to knock in a rut.

Vistor: "Looks good, but what's with that divot over there?"
    Me: "It's, um, character."
