I use the feathers from the birds we harvest to make my own arrow fletchings. I make the c0ck feathers from the wings of turkeys that I harvest. I am a traditional archer and bowhunter and I make all my own equipment.

I like to use whole uncut white feathers for the two hen feathers and a homemade c0ck feather. I found 7 good looking specimens (one is a spare)

Next I split them to get rid of the side that I won’t need.

Then I find the best section in the middle of the length and cut off the ends. These are longer than I need but I will trim them later

Because the split base is way to thick I need to thin them down.

I use a belt sander with a fine grit belt because the bases are pretty soft. I finish them with a sanding block

The thined feather is a lot less beefy.

Next I cut them to their finished length.

After fletching, I use a feather burner to give them their shape.

I am either an admin or a mod or a member of several bowhunting or archery forums on the net. Most likely, at some point I said something to you in a chat room that will forever make you my enemy. Most likely, I made a harmless comment taken out of context or one that was completely mis-read. If not, I will be sure to do so soon enough. I should add to my signature that I am a curmudgeon in training and that my comments are usually a humorous poke and that I am not responsible for bruised egos and knee-jerk reactions that result. Many folks take these sorts of sites very serious and in short order, it becomes a Who-has-a-bigger-wiener-contest or an all out rage flame filled with hate filled rants. If you and I crossed paths at some point in the past and we shared harsh words, simply know that I was most likely right and you were to stubborn to admit it. :throw:

    OR..............................................

It could be because I used the name from the books by Patrick F. McManus. If that is the case, ignore what I said above. :tu:

Crap! That is the much less exciting option. Don't despair, we have plenty of time to become mortal cyber enemies. The day is young. What are you're views on FOB's, Mech. heads, Mathews bows, QDM, Cull bucks, Baiting, crossbows, etc. ? If were going to have a proper dust up, we need to establish sides right up front. There is nothing more irritating than later discovering that you and I agree on something after we have already declared war on one another. It makes our very important internet war seem.................... Well.................... Silly.

    We cant have that.

I await your declaration of war and your terms.

For the record I've never been to a site where this happens as infrequent as here. Don't get me wrong, it happens occasionally. But for the most part this site's participants coexist pretty well. One of the reasons I like it here so much.

In addition, when arguments do happen, it doesn't stoop to the level of name calling which is a major problem at most other forums IMO.

    BTW, welcome to the site.

Your gesture of kindness means I cant go to war with you for at least a week. Sleep with one eye open. Muwahahahaha.

There are several forums that are very civil. Trad gang is one of the best ones. Bowsite and Archery talk can get down right heated and silly. Its all good natured as far as I'm concerned but some will take it too far. Im here because I stumbled across the spot and it looked like a good place to take a load off.

Well, after consulting my war party, we have determined that we agree with 4 of the 7 points so rather than go to war today, we will take a wait and see approach but know we are watching you.

LOL at "should be called bowguns"

Don't go and try to get on my good side.

    I like this guy!

Hey Crabtree...about that feather burner. Do you just heat the feathers to make them more flexible and then fletch them to your shaft. Cool post!
