My son's 4th B-day is coming up soon and I would like to get him a "toy" bow. Not sure what is appropriate for a 4 year old. Suction Cup or blunt tip? He will only be shooting this with the direct supervision of me. Some that I found are: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hobb...Rprd718522&WTz_l=SBC;BRprd718522;cat104565780 2. http://nxtgenoutdoors.com/detail.cfm?productID=40 3. http://www.mosquitocreek.com/Hunter-Dan-Compound-Bow-Set/productinfo/COP141/ Any help would be appreciated.
My 4 year old has the first one and its nice because he can shoot it in the house. Are you looking for suction cup ends or field tips?
I don't know I guess. I think suction cups for the same reason so he can shoot in the casement but how well do they fly? I presume the field tip bows shoot better?
The first one isn't actually a compound. The "cams" are fixed and the string is kind of like an elastic string. But, surprisingly, it shoots pretty straight. The other two bows look to have actual cams, or wheels, and will probably shoot farther. Wyatt has had his for probably 5 months and it was great to get him shooting it and learning about a bow, but this summer I believe I am going to actually get him a real bow that he can shoot in the yard with me. Hope that helps!
It does help. Thanks. When you say a real bow, are you talking a real youth compound? Or just something with FP's?
A real youth compound. They make some with extremely short drawlengths. But, its not something I would have gotten Wyatt for a first bow. He needed to learn a bit about bows first. He has actually learned a bit by watching me shoot and me explaining to him how they work.
If wheels on the bow are not a priority you can check this one out. http://www.3riversarchery.com/Youth...hot+Junior+Set_c16_s234_p0_i2379_product.html http://www.3riversarchery.com/Youth+Archery+Bow+Sets_c16_s234_p0_thumb.html
Just a thought Brad: http://www.bowhunting.com/shopping/Products/Cartel-Mini-Compound-Bow-Set-Blue__4091.aspx
My son used that first one for about a year when he was 4. He used to shoot my truck with it. Also, I like the one Bruce showed.
If you want a bow to grow with him and last a long long time look at the Diamond Nuclear Ice. I have bought my son almost all of the bows shown and had issues with all of them with overdrawing the bow too much and starting bad habits. The Nuclear Ice has a positive draw stop that is very very adjustable. He is now 7 and has had the bow for two years now and shooting 10 times better than ever!! http://diamondarchery.com/#/productBreakdown?r=products_products&i=25
That looks like something to check into in the future for sure. But a 180fps for a 1st bow is a little much for his age. I want him to prove to me that he can handle the responsibility of handling a bow first. Something that won't cause any damage to people or things. Thanks I'll keep that in mind.
My suggestion is to get a 10# recurve. Bear has some really nice youth bows and you won't have to worry about draw length issues or bad habits formed from improperly fitted equipment. Plus, they are the best way to learn proper mechanics and are a blast to shoot. I know many think this is too young to wory with mechanics and form but imo,if you can learn and have a blast and not have to correct issues later, that is the way to go. But the main thing is that they shoot and have fun.
My 5 year old daughter is shooting a Bear youth bow (can't think of the name of it right now while at work). It is a compound that is turned way down on poundage. It has a Whisker Bisquit and a single pin sight. My 2 year old son really wants to shot it, but can not pull it back. I am hoping by the time he is 4 he can. The bow hangs up in the basement where they can not reach it. Also, my daughter is only allowed to shoot it when supervised by me. Of couse, that seems to be every night when I am working on flinging some arrows! Good luck with your search man! Mike
