Its becoming increasingly easier to become a female country star today, a live concert appearance with your new breasts is a sure way to get some TV time.

Get the Steve Earle disc called " Townes ". He covers Townes Van Zandt's songs. It's awesome.

I agree with alot of the people on here i was born and raised on country music, and i am in my early twenties and people wonder why i listen to bands like alabama, steve earle, clint black, and george strait. I'm not one for these new bands but i sure like Justin Moore and Eric church cuz they sing about the good things in life and don't try to he a pop/country star like everyone else. just my .02 cents.

Hey GMMAT, one of my best buddies in college wrote "Never Knew Lonely" in his dorm room. He sold full rights to a publishing company out of Chicago. They in turn, sold it to Vince Gill, he recorded it and it went to the top of the charts. But since he bought full rights, he was able to claim it as his own. Many artists do this. In fact, most artists wont buy a song unless it includes full rights so they can claim it as their own. Dont be so sure about who is or is not an "artist" writing their own music. While we all sat around a lounge area in the dorm watching TV, Vince was interviewed and gave a bs sob story about how he wrote that song while he was in Europe missing his family. I however, saw my buddies notebook with the original song and the check he recieved for writing it. My friends opitons were, $1200 for the song and keep the rights, with little chance it would ever be recorded, or, $7500 to give up full rights and a chance someone big would buy it. Being a starving college student, he sold full rights. After Vince bought it, they flew my friend to Nashville for a long weekend to work with the studio musicians on the arrangement. There are a lot of unknowns out there making a living writing music that others claim as their own.

I forgot to mention, that even though I know he did not write a lot of his own songs, Vince Gill is and always will be a country music legend. I agree with you whole heartedly on that.

Don't think I ever said anyone writes ALL their songs. I've got a buddy who writes songs for Nashville. He sells them, just like your friend. Sometimes they come out close to what he writes. Sometimes they don't. I'd love to know the full story on that song (his interview about 'writing" it). He's about as "old school" as they come. I'd be very disappointed if it went down like you depict.

I also know a guy who claims to have written a couple of songs James Taylor recorded ("his" songs). I've come to the realization the guy I'm talking about is full of ****.

Then you are disappointed. I watched my buddy work on that song with his guitar in his room. I was there when he played and sang it for the rep from the publishing company and I saw the check he received when he sold it. A year later, there sat Vince Gill in an interview giving a very detailed descripiton about how he wrote the song himself while on tour in Europe. We were all laughing at my friend because he was going nuts, calling Vince every name under the sun. I know there are plenty of artists out there that can and do write some of their own songs, but I think we might all be surprised at how often they claim the work of others as their own. Most of them just dont have the time it takes to write their own songs.

By the way, I wasnt trying to bust on you, just making a point that I think we need to take everything theses musicians say with a grain of salt.

Yeah....but full idsclosure is - I've met Vince several times. He plays golf at the Univ. of Vanderbilt course. I used to work with the old head coach's son (both dad and son are ex-TOUR players). I got to meet him in the mid 90's a few times. I met him, again, about 4 yrs ago. Another golfing buddy knows someone in Vince's production crew.

So, I'd be a little disappointed to find out it went down like that.

    What's your buddy's name, BTW?

While that song is a little blah, he is one HECK of a guitar player, so he's ok in my book. Still an artist and not singing about being a hick, having a hillbilly bone, being a redneck, chewing, driving a redneck mud truck, etc. That's what I can't stand. Blue-collar is one thing. White trash is another. One you should be proud of. The other? Well...:poke:

Look, I was there and clearly explained the events a couple of times now. Believe it or not, makes no difference to me. I was there first hand and it went down EXACTLY as I have depicted. Vince lied about the song, period. No big deal, I am sure most musicians do the very same thing, it is the unknows side of the business to most.

The next time you hang with Vince, you can tell him hello from Joe with disappointment in your voice.

GMMAT, why dont you just come out and call me a liar. Yes, his name is Joe and that is probably more than I needed to give you in the first place. I am not one to come on a public forum and start giving out names of others for obvious reasons. I respect his privacy and his friendship. I was merely sharing what I thought was an interesting side of the music business from a first hand experience. If you want to believe something else because you played golf with the guy than enjoy your little fantasy world and keep the Vince Gill poster hanging over your bed. I owe you nothing more on this as you would not believe it even if I had my buddy send you a copy of the cancelled check and the original lyrics scribbled on notebook paper. I'm sure Vince is a great guy and I know he is very talented, but the bottom line is, he has taken credit for writing songs that others wrote. As I said before, not a biggie to me, just an interesting part of the music industry that most "artists" would just as soon we never knew. I just thought it would be an interesting experience to share. You have insinuated by your tongue in cheek comments that I have been less than honest. And you did so on a public forum. You may also make your apology public or you will have lost any respect I was beginning to have for you. Please, no PM's as you REALLY dont want to hear my true thoughts on your behavior.

Honestly, I don't give a flip what you think, Fletch. And, I never called you a liar. Now....your buddy......

If you believe I wrote "Freebird".....I believe your buddy wrote that song (Kinda hard to prove I didn't, though, isn't it. I mean....I said I did). If your buddy's a successful songwriter, shouldn't his name be public knowledge, anyways? I wanted to see what his other accomplishments were.

Apologize? Please. If you send me your Skynyrd shirt, though, I'll sign it for ya.

I'm trying to understand the "logic". Me, calling someone you know a liar is sinful. You, calling someone I know a liar - "isn't"?
