really need some help..follow up to electric fence..!

Discussion in 'Whitetail Deer Hunting' started by Evan Nimalovitch, Aug 22, 2018.

  1. Hey guys, im excited to hunt this deer that I posted before, but I really am looking for any help on what I should do about the cattle that are consistently hitting the bate, and in my opinion hurting deer movement..

do I introduce a electric fence to the area..? everything I have seen can really spook them off the site.. or will they just jump it and ignore it..? or-- do I just hunting with the cattle having access and hope I get a chance at the deer coming in..?

You'll get several different answers but in my experience with the farm I hunt, also has cows, if they've been there awhile the deer don't seem to mind them being around. I've hunted stands with cows right on other side of fence and still had good activity with deer. Owner of farm moves cows around to different fields as the crops come out during the fall and it only changes deer movement at the beginning but if its a big enough area after a while the cows do their thing and the deer will do their's.

If it's allowed a electric fence will limit where the cows will go and as far as deer the only thing you'll haveta worry bout it them just plowing through it and having to put it back up. Have had that happen before myself. But for the most part they'll just jump over it.

No experience with cattle but our farm has 7 horses that roam from field to field after the hay gets cut in sept and they have zero impact on deer movement. Just last weekend I saw my top buck towing an 8pt and a spike grazing smack in the middle of the horses and before they came out there were 3 does and a few fawns in the same field along with the horses. Not sure how differently the deer view cattle as opposed to horses but hay...

Use the cows to your advantage...They will spot movement or hear a noise way before you do.
