So about a month ago I turned over some small plots. Planted them In a clover/chickory mix. It has been pretty dry but there was a 60% chance for heavy storms for 3 days following the day I got it in. Well luck was not on my side. It may have sprinkled haha. And we haven't seen 5 drops of rain since. Growth has been virtually non existent. And it's spent a lot of hot dry days in the 90s We are scheduled for a few days of rain this upcoming week. My question is do I call it a wash and turn it and plant it again? Or do I let it ride and hope for the best. I have been very carful in the past about not planting with no rain in sight and this time I got burned so not really sure where to go from here
I can't speak for the chickory but I imagine the clover seed will still be viable. If I had any doubt I'd probably just broadcast it and harrow it in. At worst you may end up with a thick stand....if it rains.
The seed will still germinate once it gets rain. Like covey said, if you decide to broadcast more seed you'll just end up with a thicker stand once it does rain. This could be a bad thing if you're in an area that's forecasted to have limited moisture in the next couple months. My plot with clover, brassicas, and beets went without rain for 1.5 months but it shot up after a good .5" finally came Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm sort of debating the same situation. I planted WI Pure Attraction oats, and winter pears with brassicas. The rain we were supposed to get didn't really happen. I checked the plot yesterday and some spots have about 3" of growth. Others are just getting tinny shoots while other spots look totally barren. Was thinking reseeding the bare spots but I'm not sure if the seed that was planted is still dormant and will take off after we get rain, or if it is done and I should reseed.
I'm in the same boat with my rye/oats/clover plot. The next 2 days have rain forecasted, so I'm holding out hope. If it doesn't spur some germination, I'll be reseeding lightly.
I know this is the hard part....... Be patient. Those small seeds will be ready to go once you get the rain
Thanks for the input all! Good to know I'm not the only one having the this same issue. Haha yeah coming down to the wire on the recommended planting times has me a little jittery!
