I have always used sheds that i have found from the spring before with at being said. I got a packrack Magnum last year for Christmas, I have been playing around with them here recently. They sound ok, but not sure if i want to make the switch. What is everyones thoughts?
Really don't know much about the pack rack but haven't used real antlers in a long time . I use the Hunters Specialty rattle bag (wood) unless it's raining , then I'll use the Knight and Hale rattle bag (plastic) . I did play with a pack rack a little the other day and they do sound good .
real, I have a set of 4 sheds, all the same side, drilled a hole in the bases and tied them on a string, then tie that string to my bow rope, rattle them a bit in the stand, then drop them and make all kind of racket on the ground. Makes leaves rattle, ground thumps, I think it sounds more real However I've rattled in more bucks using the primo's rattle bag sadly LOL
I bought the Black Rack - Deer Rattling Antlers last year I didnt get a chance to use them last year but they sound great Amazon.com: Black Rack - Deer Rattling Antlers w/ Instructional video: Sports & Outdoors Black Rack by Illusion - YouTube
I have just made a set of rattling antlers this year using the rack of an 8 point I bought for 10 bucks on craigslist. IMO its just more practical to use real antlers.
I use the K&H pack rack and have confidence in it. A little bit of practice with it and it sounds like the real thing.
I use real sheds and big ones. It is a hassle to walk quietly, climb the tree and place them in the tree. I have more confidence with them. It is really funny to watch me walk when I have the decoy with me at the same time.
I have killed many of my deer using rattling. I have always used real antlers. I cut the brow tines off and cut off the top two or three inches of each tine and sanded them smooth. They get strapped to my backpack and go on every hunt. Our deer are very receptive to calling and its my favorite style of hunting. I have rattled in deer as early as October 15th and have had as many as 7 bucks come to a single sequence. Its like meth to me. Every time I bang them together I expect action.
It is awesome when a rutted up buck comes charging in looking for the noise. I've only used racks that I sawed off of deer I've shot though I have listened to the rattling bags and they sound fine to me. I never liked the sound of the synthetic antlers myself. Funny to though that I have never shot a buck I've rattled in - though I did pass a nice 8 last year that stood broadside at 30yds along with a 5pt...most were not big enough or just kept themselves in the brush with no shot till after shooting hours ended. I do think it would be best to use in tandem with a decoy because the big ones know they are supposed to be looking for another buck and if they don't see one they'll likely stay in the thick cover.
I've used the plastic rods in a bag and have deer come to them. But not by crashing them together, but rather lite tinkling of pieces like they are starting to spar.
I have the circular pack rack magnum thing. I think, it's circular and plastic. I got it cheap. Surprisingly, it has worked great. I rattled 2 bucks in with it last year. I don't use sheds. It's really difficult for me to find them on our proprerty.
the packrack sounds good, friend of mine uses it. I use to use the knight and hale rattle bag also, but I have made the switch and bought the Black Rack this year
The bags will work. I've used both. Someone once told me the antlers off a deer that was shot sounded different than sheds. I could never tell the difference. I have a set of antlers I sawed off. Took off the brows after I smashed my fingers a few times. Have twine tied to them and hang in tree when not using. I bought a bag last year and I thought they seem to work about the same. Doesn't always work either way, but great fun when it does work.
