Neither. Wait a few weeks yet. (At least where I hunt). I won't do either until late October & even then it depends on the weather. IMHO. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I tickeled my rattle bag this morning at about 7:50 and 20 minutes later I had 3 young bucks around 50 yards.
I have never, ever had a buck come into rattling. Grunts and heat bleats, yes. But wait another week or two.
IMO now is the time to be rattling . The fight for dominance has just kicked in and the bucks have switched from a little light sparring to some pretty heated battles . I've always proffered to do most of my rattling before most of the bucks have had it handed to them ....... you have a better chance of calling in more bucks that way . With that said though , it's all about location and wind direction . If you set up and rattle from a spot where a mature buck feels comfortable circling down wind of you , he'll scent you and never come in .
I can usually get away with light rattling right now. The rut is slowly starting to roll in SE OH right now. The 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 yr. old bucks are running rampant but the big daddies are still laying low except to eat. Another 7-10 days (if the weather doesn't get hot) and the mature bucks should be more active and you should probably be able to call more aggressive.
