I've said it before. Nashville cares nothing about talent. Its all about marketing. Whens the last time you saw a fat ugly chic that can really sing have a Nashville hit? ( that fat Judd chick doesn't count, she can't sing!)
ferg...you are right man Chris Cagle is pretty damn good. On Garth, hell of an entertainer, but I would bet he didn't write or help write 40% of his songs. It's really not that he couldn't or didn't, when you get that big the material comes to you. It gets easy to rely on the multitudes of people that are daily putting songs they wrote for you in your face rather than sitting down and writing one.
Damnit you beat me too it...shes the first thing that popped in my head when Jeff said that :D Entertainer of the year as well
From what i know about country music (not much), isnt it rare for a popular singer or group to write there own songs? I dont think George Strait wrote any of his 55 numbers 1's We already covered how Garth and Tim didnt... What about Brooks and Dunn? ***edit*** Kix and Ronnie both write the groups songs... Im sure guys like Vince Gill/Alan Jackson wrote there own songs as well
Is is just a country music thing? (not writing one's own songs) I mean I know that others don't, but I am asking is it more prevailent in the country music genre?
I'll say it again. Jamey Johnson. George Straight, Trace Adkins, and Joe Nichols can all think him for the hits that he wrote for them as well. Sad thing is Nashville won't give him the air time because he doesn't play the "pop" country like Rascal Flatts. (Using country and Rascall Flatts in the same sentence makes me want to puke.) Here.... you guys might reconize this song.. yeah, he wrote it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_EkDJnHFIM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiMdb2MnYr8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgzP6nSDyOs
You mean the Hannah Montana of country music... That girl (along with many others) should be classified pop music... Makes me sick to my stomach... With that being said, I don't think there are too many artists that write all they're own music these days. I personally know and have hunted with singer/songwriter Wynn Varble from Nashville. At the link below you'll see some of the songs he's written and a lot of them by some pretty heavy hitters, including Garth Brooks, Trace Adkins, Darryl Worley, Brad Paisley, Chris Ledoux and more... http://www.wynnvarble.com/disc.htm
While I am not a fan of his politcal views, I gots mad respect for The Boss in the "writing your own music" category. I have been a long time country music fan, but have been sucked into Bruce mania.
True, but GMMAT was wanting a country "artist" who wrote his/her own music, sang/performed the song, and played an instrument. Taylor Swift does all of that. So even if you don't like her music (which I'm sure no one here does), you still have to somewhat respect the girl for being an actual musician, unlike 98% of the female "artists" in today's music.
Not sure about playing an instrument, but I saw an interview several years ago where they said Toby Keith had written almost every one of his songs. That's pretty good, considering the amount of #1s he's had as well.
