i currently do not use a range finder and wasn't sure if investing the money into one is a good idea or not and if so what types of brands do you guys use?
IMO, it depends on your max range. If you are shooting past 25 yds then, yes, it is worth the investment. At farther ranges the difference in impact point on a guess that is 5 yds off is a game changer. Personally I use one all the time and my max range is approx. 25 yds. Thsi came into play a couple days ago. The first day on this stand I forgot the range finder and I guess this potential line of travel at 25 yds. The next morning I had the range finder and ranged it and it was 24-26 yds so now I knew what I would do if given the chance. I was looking east and when I swiveled my head back towards west caught a doe strolling along the trail at a moderately fast walk. In a matter of about 5 seconds I got the bow up, knew to put the 25 yd space on her and got the shot off. Everything happened very quickly but there was no doubt as to range. That is the benefit of a range finder: There is no nagging doubt as to the range of the animal at the moment of truth. I recommend a range finder for every bow hunter if possible. As long as it accurately determines range any of them will be worth it.
I think it is always handy to have a range finder, and like anything they have come down in price. I practice shooting with one and have it in the stand with me at all times.
I bought the wild game innovations range finder from bass pro and paid 115 for it. It seems to work really good. The numbers are a little on the small side to read but is easy to read as it so you just have to get used to it.
i agree it is nice to have especially when your not sure of distance. i recently bought one and it has helped. a plus for me is you take it up with you once range trees or other objects and remember how far they are and never have to take it with you again. but i always take mine.
Agree 1,000% If you're hunting from a treestand, it's easy to pre-range items that are a little out-of-place (that really crooked tree), that pile of sticks and limbs in that direction, etc... If you're more of a spot-and-stalk kind of guy, or simply like to have your rangefinder a bit more accessible than having to fish it out of your cargo pocket -- or worse yet, your pack -- at the moment of truth, check this product out: http://s4gear.com/
Another fan of "scanning" all shooting lanes with a range finder. It's nice to take the range of the shot out of the equation when the moment of truth comes and every second counts. I use a bushnell yardage pro. It cost about $150 ... works just fine.
yea i feel like its something im going to invest in but got to get some money first thanks guys for your help
I was looking at some at bass pro, the wild game RF seemd to have marginal reviews. i was looking at these two: any opinions or suggestions? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/s...1_62627_425001008_425000000_425001000_425-1-8 this one is one sale at meijer for $99 http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/s...8_425000000_425001000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT
I would go Bushnell but only because I have read many others' good comments on them. The Simmons could be great but I know nothing about them.
One of the most valuable tools we can carry, in my opinion... My bro just bought me a new bushel and its awesome. It's s mall price to pay to the animals we intend to harvest, given how reliant our shot placement is on yardage....
Get one. I'm like Bruce and Greg. It's more for a confidence builder to me. If I "think" I know how far "that" is, that's one thing, but if I know for a FACT that it's 27 yards, it makes me so much more confident in my shot. I do range trees, sticks, bushes, all that kind of good stuff in case one of those rutting bucks runs through and I don't get a chance to range him! Vendetta, anyone?
I STILL get fooled sometimes by certain shots. For example, I had moved a stand 7 yards to another tree, I looked at the one lane that I had and said, 'that's gotta be about 25." Nope. 34. Now I don't have to wonder. There's also alot of times I am right too. That's because I use my range finder to check and train my judging. I got one 3 years ago from my buddies as a present at my bach party. Don't know how I did it before this. AND if you get one, remember (MGH) to change the batteries at the start of every season.
i bought that lil wild game one. random purchase, on sale for 75 bucks. once i figured it out. works great.
i have a nikon Prostaff 550 and love it. It is overkill for just archery, but I can also use it for rifle.
