Anyone on here raise elk in high fences? I'm curious about this and would really like to get in it some day!

No couple of farms nearby that have em though, I kicked the idea around for about oh.... 30 secs.

When my kiddos were little I always enjoyed teasing them right before Christmas by driving by and telling them all of Santas reindeer were in jail.....

    For meat or to "hunt"?

Around here they are raising them for meat and bone, not hunts.

I would raise them for meat and bone, maybe sell some huge bulls to preserves if they offer enough

No interest in raising ELK behind a fence for me.

If the animals are raised in a fence and considered farm animals not needing licenses to kill (thought I read that in another thread a while back about fence hunts), is the meat sellable? Just curious with how wild game can't be sold and all if that would be feasible, and if what I remembered reading was right.

Too much work. My friends family runs a pretty big deer breeding operation and holy smokes is that a high dollar setup. One straw of semen costs like $5-10k and you have a 5 minute window from when it thaws til it's bad apparently.

My dads friend raises elk here in Kentucky but has a much smaller operation.

I have no problem w it, for preserve shootings or meat or antlers or pets or whatever. It's an animal, and it's raised as livestock. I'll always support that right.

Yeah I don't think I would get into the genetics as much. Mostly like beef cattle except selling horns too

They are still extremely expensive and dangerous as far as livestock go. But I agree it's pretty neat being that close to such huge antlered animals

My boss has 3 bulls and about 6 cows at his house. He basically raises them as pets and does not kill them for meat or anything. They are awesome to be around but they can get very aggressive. If they are not separated when the cows go into estrous, they will fight and kill each other because they have no where to go to get away.

I'd rather raise buffalo then elf. Premium price for meat, hides, and horns (skulls). That and you can't hunt them unless on a preserve.

And yes... I'd let some fool come poke one for quite a bit of coin.

I'm sure you could charge way more to let people hunt elf. And I'm sure some creep would buy elf meet. There's quite a market for it.

I would think that elk meat would be right up there with buffalo meat?

Used to be a place few miles up the road. They sold the meat and the local gas stations always had jerky and couple stores had meet. Was pretty good stuff. Like everything here its expensive to do so think they got out of it now, haven't seen them in pen for while.

There was a fella that raised them (100+) near okc. He had to destroy his herd because they had brucellosis.

Some people got into dwarf tossing over by Grand Rapids a while back. I'll bet elf tossing would be an even bigger hit.

I'd be all for elf hunting on farms. Would that be considered low fence hunting? How big would you have to get for a P&Y elf?
