Make sure to note the noise level with the blades open in flight as well. I would be curious to know how loud they are.
Crick, I have shot several with one or both blades open...out to 40 yards is still a dead animal. I have not shot past that due to room issues in my yard. Scott, I paid no attention to the noise, but I am curious now. Crick, if you do this please note the noise level as I am 2 lazy to shoot for the last few months.
I am curious to know what kind of accuracy you are referring to when you say "still a dead animal"? Sometimes we are shooting through "windows", between trees etc and a couple inches can make a difference. Thanks. Again, only to satisfy my curiosity.
I tried the 3 blade and it was difficult to keep the blades stowed. I shot one at a turkey and it sounded like a bottle rocket taking off. The 2 blade was awesome. I just made sure the blades were right after I nocked my arrow. This is the exit wound on a deer I shot this past year. There's no doubt they're devastating when the shooter and broadhead work properly.
Nah you won't have a problem. I shoot 60 and there are plenty of people who shoot upwards of 80 that haven't had any.
It's all about tuning properly. You never hear of a fixed head failing. That's because you have to tune your bow to make them work. If you have a tuned bow you're ahead of the game with any head. Right now I use the Shuttle T. It shoots just as good as any field point, mechanical or whatever. It hit's where you aim and it kills. You want a mechanical, make sure you have the proper poundage and tune the bow to shoot bullet holes in paper. If that arrow is going sideways at impact all bets are off no matter where it hits.
No worries Scott, I shot at my mckenzie deer and consistantly remained in the heart lung area...but to further satisfy my curiosity I shot the block (but only to 30) and remained in the black dots. I am not a great shot, but I shoot decent. I did not see any varience in my normal shooting with field points or the practice tip as when I shot with the blade/blades open. To really tell you would need a better shot than I.
It does not matter how much weight you pull, it's how fast the arrow travels after it leaves the bow.
I agree. I hear a lot of people whine about how the broad head failed them, how they did not have a blood trail, or not a big enough entrance/exit hole. Fact is that if your bow is tuned, you are confident and skilled with you equipment you can kill an animal with any broad head. That is not to say that there is not someplace a head that is just crap. If you do your job, the equipment will do its job. I have shot plenty of deer and watched them fall. Some within 30 yards, others farther. Some have ran a mile. I have killed animals with all sorts of heads and one thing remains the same, good shots kill deer fast.
Here is a front shoulder scapula severed just above the knuckle on a huge bodied blacktail buck by a Rage 2 blade. I was using 500grn arrows as well though. I will continue to use these heads on deer until I run out of them, and I am down to 8 ish left. From there I will re evaluate and decide what to use in the future, which very well may be more Rages.
