Seeing this season will be the first i kill a deer with a bow i halve been getting lots of advice and it seems half the people who talk to me say that my montec broadhead wont get the job done like a rage 2 blade and the other half tell me that rage broadheads are crap and dont expand...... im curious as to what people on this site think shoot away
this will be my 3rd year using rage. have shot about 4 deer with them. they always open and always make a big hole. my deer didnt go more than 50 yards.the only problem they had was in 2007 on the 3 blade model. they werent opening up all the way but they fixed the problem right way and gave people replacement if they had the recalled 3 blades here is the link if you want to read it http://www.hunting-fishing-gear.com/article-display/2130.html
I do not currently use them but I have in the past. If you shoot the deer in the lungs or any soft tissue it will do the job and the head will be in great shape. However if you hit the shoulder,as I have done twice, the head will be ruined. The Rage still put the deer down within 60-70 yards though. Also the ads say no rubber bands to hold blades closed but if you do not have the rubber o-ring on they will not stay locked. No real complaints from me though. I shot 5 deer with them in 2008 and recovered all of them within 80yds.
Ben, they have the Titanium now for 79$!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will shoot the regular Rage again, and Slick trick
Like all heads, if you're shooting a properly setup arrow (i.e. correctly spined, your bow is properly tuned, and you're pushing enough KE, they will perform just fine. I prefer fixed heads, myself, or something like the Bloodrunner which is essentially expanded already, and only expands more so upon impact. I'm most likely staying with Slick Tricks/Grizz Tricks this season.
G5 T3's def best true mechanical on the market. S.S. ferile, slip cam blads, 3 blades for extra cut and 1 1/2" cut, def not going to have any issue with this broadhead. Plus NO O-RINGS!
Had a bad taste from the 3 blade rage. I suspect one or more blades were opening in flight. They would not group a 6" group at 20 yards. I began by shooting one arrow, and marking its spot, with a sharpie. Then after getting frustraited, I shot all three at the same bullseye. No worry, barely a 6" group. I am sure they were a bad batch, but I am not sure I wouldn't get another. So I am done with them. I considered the 2 blades, but that bad taste from the 3 blades got me to examining them very closely. I have the rage, spitfire, and 3 blade bloodrunners. I put each broadhead on an arrow. Then I got a piece of styrofoam about 1" thick. Styrofoam is hard to push a blade into, but it will not dull your blades. You do have to look them over very carefully to make sure no particles are in the broadhead to cause a fowling problem. First I pushed the spitfire, very slowly, but with some force. I watched as the blades began to open. The broadhead had to go approximately 3/4" of an inch in before a cutting edge was exposed to begin cutting. Then I tried the rage. Its blades are independent, and as I tried to push evenly, the individual bldes flexed independently. It does had the small blade on the tip, but the main blades would not cut until I was approximately 1" deep. The 3 blade bloodrunner only had to penetrate the stryofoam about 3/8" deep before the blades were not only cutting, but also fully deployed. Now a bow shoots alot faster and harder than I was pushing, but it sure did get me to thinking about how much energy is lost on the rage and spitfire, before any dammage can begin to be done. I am certainly going to be trying the 2 blade bloodrunners. IMO, it is a fixed blade, that expands. WOW.
Muzzy's are tried and true but my brother has used rages for awhile no complaints. however, he did lose one early in his hunting career but that was from not waiting long enough on a bad shoot and a bad shot
I personally have not used them. I don't think I have enough KE to use any mechanical, only pushing about 45. I have a friend who has started using them this year. He hasn't shot a deer with them but he says they fly good, just like field tips. I know that a lot of people use them so they must be a decent head, but I will stick with my Wasps. So far they haven't let me down.
My buddy and I have the same debate every year. I can honestly say I have seen the damage that both create on impact. In both instances the deer did not run more then 70yrds. The montec was a double lung and the rage was a horrible shot way back on the deer and it still only ran maybe 50 yrds.
ok my opinion means #$%^. But last year was my first year using a compound bow and a mech blade. Rage 2 blade did a great job on the deer. However trying to keep them closed is another story. so they redesigned them for this year if you call them they will replace your old ones in any condition with new ones @ no charge. As far as shooting thru the shoulder look 2 my pics of the doe I shoot hard quartering from me @ 37 yrds.
I'm going to give the Rage 2 blade a shot this season. I can't say it is the only broadhead in my quiver but I'm sure they will serve me well. I'm really looking forward to time in the woods this fall. C
I've killed maybe 10ish or so deer with the 2 blades now. I love them. Up until last year I've had all good or perfect shots, however last year I really put a poor shot on a doe and I was absolutely amazed at the damage the rage did to this liver/gut shot deer. She went maybe 70 yards on me, with literally no damage forward of the diaphragm. There was a trail from the liver hit that was coming out of both sides of her. I've made that exact shot probably 2-3 times in the past using both Muzzy's and Thunderheads when I was very young, and I never remember seeing blood like that or recovering the animal so quickly. I have had one Rage bend on me, it was a very steep angle 6-7ish yard shot on my 08' buck and I took him direct in the spine. It severed the spinal cord, almost severed the spine itself, and the deer dropped in a pile and thrashed for a second till I sent another on it's way. While thrashing he snapped the head off at the top of the ferrule and the arrow came out. Other than this, I've taken out shoulder blades, tons of ribs, etc.......and all of those heads are still usable today. I have damaged a couple of blades, but I replace them anyhow after each deer. The ferrules themselves seem stout enough for me.
Nap. Blood runner two blades the best of the best if you want results buy these you wont be dissapointed.
