I would have to say I usually make an attempt on a nice doe early in the year just to fill the freezer. From there on however if it isn't 130ish I will let it go unless its a management buck.
both. I enjoy venison and shooting any deer with a bow is enjoyable to me, but I'm always after that big-un
All depends on the dpsm and how you want to manage your property. For me personally I dont shoot any buck under 3 1/2 anymore. So if I want straps some years a doe gets taken.
I'm both I hunt does first part of season to fill freezer then late October I start hunting for rack.
Meat.... I'd rather take a shot on a smaller buck and pass the trophy one on the way out then chase the trophy and pass on the meat. That might change the more seasons I get under my belt and when I get a space to hang trophy's.
Meat until the freezer is full then I'll try to hold out. But we get three bucks a year here so I'm not too picky on the public land.
I guess I am both. I will only shoot a above average buck but will fill my freezer all day long with doe. Where I hunt I would have to say there are 40+ doe to every buck. So filling the freezer is never a problem.
Both. I can't seem to bring myself to shoot a doe before the rut is over though. Simply because of "what might be coming after her". I will also shoot does after I have filled my buck tag. Must be a mature buck.
When it comes to shooting a buck it has to meet my standards...so trophy. I shoot does for the freezer.
I am both will rarely shoot a buck thinking of the meat however if I do kill one will obviously enjoy its meat. I make a point to shoot several does a season and eat them all year long.
I would say both although my wife and I don't eat a lot of venny I still fill the freezer and also have family we share it with but I pass on small bucks
I'm all about filling the freezer with Gods natural good food. We go to NJ where you can shoot an unlimited number of antlerless deer and fill the freezer. You can only take one buck though so I am very picky and looking for good antlers. Then we return to our home state of Vermont where we can take three deer during bow season but only one can be a buck, so again I'm pretty picky on the bucks. So the short of it is, nock the antlerless deer down and choose wisely on the bucks.
I try to get a nice yearling doe every fall to fill the freezer, and then spend the rest of the season waiting for a big racked buck that is preferably 3.5 years old or older, and 120 inches or bigger. During gun season, I am holding out for a big buck as well. So I guess I am a "trophy" hunter, as long as my freezer is already full with doe venison. (any extra venison from the bucks I harvest is donated to the local food shelves or thru the Wisconsin donation program)
I will kill as many does as I need for meat, (last year it was 2, might be more like 4 or 5 this year) then focus solely on bone.
