I think you are officially the tracking man. Two great tracks and two found deer. Congrats to your friend!
Thanks everyone! I'm still at a loss as to how that deer lived that long. I will say, that was THE. MOST. DISGUSTING. gut job I have ever been a part of. I told him Ill hold his head and front legs, but we are turning him so I am upwind of you. Unfortunately the meat was a total loss as confirmed by the processor. The cape was starting to turn green as well and I fear that he will lose it too, but he can at least get a different cape for it. I would like to point one thing out to any of you new hunters. What we did in trailing this deer is, 99.9999999% of the time, the exact wrong thing to do. Decades of combined experience in this situation led us to make the decisions we made and I am pretty sure that deer died as we were walking out of the woods Sunday night. When in doubt, back out.
It is too bad about the meat, but excellent success story. This is exactly what "hunting" is isn't it? Can't all be a 10 yard outdoor channel shoot and recovery! Wonderful job and commitment by you and your buddy.cheers to you!
The shot "looks" like lungs, but likely got lower liver. Was it quartering to? Bill Winke had a show about low liver shots. The deer live for a day or two, and will run if jumped, as your buddy's did. When in doubt…back out. Excellent job getting the recovery.
Slightly quartering away. Exit wound was on brown and white line and in the guts about 3 inches farther back than the entrance.
Was that pic the entry or exit? Either way; I still can't figure out how that deer made it past 200 yards if he was slightly quartering away as you said. No matter what; way to stick with it and congrats you both.
Dude... 1) Round of applause for both of you doing your jobs as good hunters, and 2) Tell your buddy that shot looks like a hell of a good placement, how the hell did that deer go so far?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Congrats to your buddy on a great buck. I think it is always a good idea to try and put another arrow in a deer if you can with out pushing them too much. I am glad your hard work paid off and you recovered that deer.
