I like shooting just 2 arrows for practice at a time. I can't remember the last time I shot 3 or more arrows. When I switch to broadhead practice... I only shoot one arrow for practice at a time. Since I only get one shot when hunting... I figure practicing should be the same. When I tune for broadheads... I shoot an arrow with a broadhead and then shot one of my practice arrows. I don't now why... I just like doing it that way. It tends to keep me relaxed, focused on form and I can really focus on the one arrow with the broadhead. When I am happy with that arrow I move on to the next arrow/broadhead. I always number my arrows for hunting on the vane. I tend to have a favorite arrow even though they are all shooting very good. I won't lie... I will only use my favorite arrow on a buck. If I am hunting does... I use one of the other ones. :D I am either buck hunting or doe hunting... never both unless a monster would walk in front of me while I am doe hunting. I will not shot a doe in my good buck spots. I will pass on coyotes also. I generally have 3 arrows for deer and an arrow or two just for coyotes in my quiver. The coyote arrows have different broadheads but they are just some old broadheads I am trying to use up that I don't use on deer anymore. Those arrows are also not the same as my " good deer " arrows. I would use the arrows to kill a deer if needed... but they are setup with coyotes in mind. Do any of you have any quirks ?? Tim
Don't know if it's a quirk but I too number my arrows in groups of 8. I'll shoot 4 at one spot then 4 at another to reduce the chances of robin hooding my arrows. I then look at where each numbered arrow hit in sequence.
No, I'm perfect. Hell yes I have quirks, but I'm not listing them to give you guys ammo to use against me.
Almost every time I shoot a 5 arrow group, the 5th will almost always be a robbin hood.. like 90% of the time !! now I only shoot a group of 3 arrows MAX & try to space them on purpose tight groups are great but cost a fortune in fletchs & shafts
I am starting to notice some and I am changing things up a lot due to arrow damage lately. I will be shooting one broadhead at a time now and I will also be shooting groups of 3 with field points. I was shooting 6 with pield points and 3 with broadheads. I have a group of 3 trees that is at about 22yd from where I have my target set up. Ocassionally I will sneak up on my target and shoot up against the tree as if I were stalking. just incase the same thing happens as it did last year. I walked up on 3 deer total last season leaving my stand. I want to be prepare incase it happens this year.
When hunting if I don't see any deer the next time out I nock a different arrow than the one I did the last time. Until I find an arrow that I see deer with when nocked every time. Make sense ? ?
Whenever I nock an arrow I always tap it on the bowstring to make sure the tip is screwed in tight. If it isn't you can hear it rattle. I don't know...just something I do every single time the arrow goes on the nock without even noticing. Also sometimes I will shoot a group of green fletchings, then a group of orange fletchings at a different spot on the target and see which ones won.
When I draw a bow I always rotate my bowhand wrist side to side to allow the grip to settle into my hand before I bare down. I do not shoot field tips anymore for practice. I only practice with broadheads and only shoot one arrow at a time.
I too shoot bh's first, only because I figure I'll chop up less vanes that way on the field point arrows. I actually tried, upon recommendation from an article, of running for about 5 - 10 minutes, to get my heart rate and breathing up and then shooting. I'm sure the neighbors enjoyed that performance that evening!
I would never lure you in just to make fun of you. Your bow probably prays before each practice or hunt... that you don't death grip it with your big mits !!!! :D Tim
i like to mix broadheads in with field points (if i can) i dont like to shoot at the same spot on the target twice when hunting i pull up my bow first (before anything else is set) backpack, rattle bag, grunt etc
If I'm practicing with some buddies, we always call out scenario's. For example, we'll take the target and put it out at various distances and say something like a 330" bull just stepped out. How many yards do you think that is? We'll all shoot without looking at the range finder. After we all shot we'll pull it out and get the distance. It's a good way of judging distance. When I'm out in the stand I'll say a any many miny moe for each of my 5 arrows and whoever it lands on is the lucky winner for the day. If I don't see deer then it doesn't get used on the next hunt. Pretty dumb.
I too number my arrows and only shoot 3 at a time..... SUPERSTITIONS: -While hunting, I ALWAYS climb the ladder/Loc-On starting with my right foot first -Always start with the #1 arrow -Never hunt without a snuff -recite "Pick A Spot And Kill It" just before EVERY shot (practice or hunting) ...And a few more that I would be banned for if I posted....
