This is kind of a stupid question but whatever.

On flat ground (aka Kansas) far away do you have to be for deer to not spook from being downwind of you ?
    600 yards ? 300 ?

Example;if somebody is hunting approximately 900/1000 yards UPWIND of me how much will deer spook from HIS wind coming down through my spot ?

Kinda new to the whole flatland way of things so not sure, thanks in advance.

Trying to understand why you'd think scent can travel farther in flat terrain than it can in hilly terrain. It's been proven deer can smell over 400 yards which is a quarter mile, what distance they'll spook from will depend on the deer, pressure, and situation.

Where I used to hunt was very steep and rough. If you were hunting on the top of a steep mountain with your wind blowing off the side then your scent would carry out over the valley a ways. And in hilly terrain the wind swirls and drifts much differently than on flat ground. But if your hunting flat ground your scent just "cruises" along at ground level.

Maybe I'm just being to paranoid.

Not paranoid, just recognizing the reality. Deer are all different and will react differently. Some will immediately run when they smell humans while others will look and slowly skirt the area. The 400 yard number is one that I have heard and yet I have watched deer pick up a human at over 500 yards. A lot depends on how much human activity there is in the area. I've also seen deer just casually walk into cover and stand there watching a man and woman walk on by and then come right back out and resume feeding.

With places where the winds never perfect. I'd ignore the winds and trust your instincts.
