The threads about "how far do you walk", "ATV necessary, got me thinking about a situation I have.

Scenario: I have 40 acres of land that I have only 1 good access trail to. It is an abandoned pipeline. Now, my 40 acres is surrounded by hunting clubs, although the pipeline is totally legal for me to use to access my property. The pipeline runs right thru the hunting club. I use my ATV to travel a little over a 1/4 mile to my property. I really hate using it for the noise and smell issue. (Although I do have a muffler silencer which helps a lot.)

Questions: Do you think it would be safe to walk in on this pipeline in the dark with a flashlight/headlamp? (Keep in mind some of their stands are only 75yds off the pipeline)

Question 2: Do you think this would be courteous to these hunters? Or would you really care?

    Thanks

Bobby we have a pipeline/electric right of way on the lease. Some guys have stands right on the "hi-line". The understanding is that if you put a stand in a traffic area, you may just get traffic. If the right of way is a legal ingress/egrss for you I would use it. I may stop by the hunt club and let them know depending on your relationship with them. And the flashlight and maybe even blaze orange would be a must at least on the way in and out.

i know what you mean about being courteous and i'd prob not wanna mess up their hunts. but if that is the only way in, then what do you do????

id do like txj said and stop by the club and let them know...

no i would not walk on access road, even with flashing light.. people are Moran's get yourself a old used 4x4 truck with a heater it's there fault if the are hunting a road that other landowners use to get in and out of. it's a simple right of way.. you paid for it and should not act like you are intruding

my safety first , there hunting second.

Good answers guys. I agree totally on the safety issue. I also want to remain on good terms with these people.

The issue of driving a truck down to my land is also an idea, but that puts me back to square 1 as far as disturbance goes. I am really more concerned with disturbing animals on my property than theirs. (And this is an issue with any vehicle going in)

    Any other thoughts?:)

I would literally love this if I could get a good deal on one. Very quiet and would be ideal for my situation.

ATV with muffler silencer. I have pretty decent luck with not scaring deer away as I still have to walk anywhere from 100 to 500yds to my stand locations. I have always noticed though that deer movement is way after I get in stand. Like 9:30 to 10:00AM almost every sighting.

Not sure if the extra walking (and sweat) would be worth it. If you are walking 100 to 500yds more, the atv is probably not be affecting anything anyhow. Hard to know for sure. I would probably continue to ride the atv, given the safety factor and sweat factor - and the fact that you don't see deer movement till later in the morning typically in that area.

So you are talking about walking 440 yards on a pipeline to your 40 acres versus riding a quad?

I'd walk it, use a red light so folks see you.

This is what I would do as well.

That isn't a very long walk at all.

The walking distance is not an issue. I guess the safety factor is my main issue. I realize a light "should" solve that problem. You never know with some of the "shoot the moving bushes" types out there. Also, the sweaty walking irritates the crap outta me. Oh well, you can not have it all in your favor all the time. We shall see how it goes.:)
