I have been wondering, what is everyone's strategy as far as hunting with a hang on stand and climbing sticks? Do you try setting up downwind of doe bedding areas as the rut approaches? Or do you try to get as close to a bucks bedding as you can without him knowing your there? I just bought another hang on with climbing sticks (thanks peakrut ), and need to change my hunting strategy to go along with my new purchase. Feel free to post anything that helps explain your reasoning
I hunt the does. Thats where the bucks will be. Try to find a pinch point that those bucks will be crusing thru. Being mobile helps you tweak your setup if need be and IMO is a huge adavantage. Dont forget to play the wind and hunt all day. During the late season if your hunting a high pressure area I would play the wind and hunt close to buck bedding in his core area. Hope you shot one you like!
Here is a satellite image of the new place I am hunting: Everything on the right 2/3 of the image is the land I can hunt, east of the fence line going north and south. To the south and southwest are crop fields, which are beans, alfalfa, and a cut corn field. The property is all pasture, with big draws with hardwoods through them. They have found some big sheds there, but I don't know where they were found. Thanks to anybody that helps me figure this property out, it has been causing some trouble.
I think u should get mapping trophy bucks by Brad herndon, read it twice. Its like a deer hunters bible for hunting terrain like this. its hard to tell how steep the terrain is in those draws whith out it being a topo. but the draw on the north part off the property along what appears to be the fence line looks like a nice pinch point boottle neck that could be connecting two doe bedding areas. more scouting needs to be done there. if the whaether is hot yet, they will wont water and a good trail should be leading to that pond on the west side of the fence in the middle draw. the south two draws along the fence where they join, is a great spot with a north wind in a week or so bucks will be crossing the ridge back and forth all day. get in there early and bring a lunch to sit all day. all of these sets might be hard to get into undetected again get in there early and stay all day and try to control ur sent. heck the hardest part is going to be haveing to wait for your buck!!! that might be more than my 2 cents
Thanks for the response polecat. I will definitely check out the north draw. I actually jumped a 100" 8 point there the other day when I was scouting. I never thought of setting up between the 2 south draws, I will definitely look for a spot there too. I have 2 trail cameras in the middle draw right now, but I am waiting until Saturday to check them, hopefully they tell me more about what the deer are doing.
but as far as being mobile, i would put one stand and climber at each of these sets and just move each one a little, twenty too fifty yards if need be. but i would not take the stand down after each hunt and move it to the next set.
