Hey guys I'm planning on taking my first test for a full time fire department this summer in Kenosha, WI Im not really expecting to get the job but more of an experience type of deal. A lot of places raised the age to 21 to test so my options are limited. I figured this would be a good starting point so i know what to expect in the future.

My question is for you guys that have done these type of test do you have any advice that may help me? or even just things that may help me in the future.

Edit- Its suppose to say firefighters lol not fighters. Fitz or somone could you change that it would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know when your headed up here for the test. You are going to be right by my cottage. Might have to stop by and do some shooting with us and go out on the boat for awhile.

never took a full time test but i liked a page on facebook called firefighter jobs look it up and they post openings at full time fire stations all over the us. I think they have a link to a app (or did have) that was a guide to getting hired firefighter edition so or somthin like that. might be worth checking into. good luck!

I have no full time experience yet....... But with that being said. You should bite the bullet and go to paramedic school right out of high school. If you plan on making a career out of it that is the route your going to have to go.

I'm currently in my first quarter of paramedic school myself.

Just relax and go into the test with an open mind. Alot of them are general knowledge tests just to eliminate the dumbasses and welfare seakers. The firefighting part comes later.

Sounds good Ferg ill let you probably at the G2G the date.
Thanks ill have to check that out. It could be a lot of help.
Im going to get some medical training done. Wether its through the department or on my own i dont know yet. Does the paramedic license good in any state? Im not sure where i want to work yet but im leaning towards Wisconsin.

Thanks for the tip. I get what your saying about eliminating people. The Champaign department here changed their requirements just recently where you need a minimum of 60 college credit hours to even get looked at.

If you are in Champaign, I'm pretty sure you can get all your Paramedic Classes at Parkland. If I recall correctly, they have a 2 year program. I'm sure you could probably get them at U of I as well, if you want to pay triple the cost.

if you get it in ILL. you need to get national registry paramedic. I know this is true for the emt b that i have, if you have a illinios lisence there are only a few states that recognise the illinois test. you have to pay a cupple hundred dollars and take the national registry test and it is good anywhere.

i looked into it cause i got my emt B illinois test and found out later on that indiana does not recongise my lisence so i cant work there as a emt.

you also need to get your emt b before you can get your paramedic.

Try to locate a good Ems academy near you, most likely will be at a hospital. Or you could go the college route. The Ems academy's make it much easier to work and go to school. Be prepared to put your life on hold for a year.

Im going to work on figuring out how to go about getting my test done that i need to this summer so i have an idea of what im doing. Ill be getting on a volunteer this fall so im sure they will be able to help me out too.

Is it a year long academy? Putting stuff on hold is no big deal since id rather just getting this school done will i can. It would be no different than going to a 4 year school time wise but instead im just splitting up the stuff id be and possibly schools rather than stay at one place.

The academy I'm going to know is around 14-15 months with the A+P class. But also you'll have to have your EMT-b first, which takes anywhere from 4-7 months. So your looking at roughly two years if you go the EMS academy route.

The test you take for your Paramedic cert is a National Registry test...and once you pass that you have 2 years until you have to renew. If you move, then you will have to apply for that states card.

I figured it would be around that time frame. How are you liking the academy? What kind of classes are you taking?

There practice test out there. Go to your local book store and they might have practice test there that you can take and test your knowledge. Also another thing is maybe go to the fire department your taking the test for and stop at the firehouse and see what the guys there say. They might give you some good advice as well. Like when I was getting ready for the FDNY written test I got a practice manual to take test in. But if you want more help you could email me ill be more then glad to give advice or help you anyway I can. Also some fire department test might have math on them so maybe study up on your math skills.

I can look for a general practice test here at the local fire academy but, the department ill be testing at is about 5 or 6 hours from me now and it will be about 2 hours once im back home for break so it would be a little hard to go there lol. Ill shoot you a PM though so if have any other questions i could get ahold of you.
