OK, so my laptop is screwed, running terribly slow and I can't upload jack. (youtube vids etc). Awhile back one of my kiddos tried to download a game and loaded some McAffee crap that I cannot get to delete. Anyway I brought it into work today for my IT guy to fix and he ended up being sick. Another guy here who is suppossed to be pretty knowledgable said all I need to do is reinstall windows. I know I saw that thrown around on here as a joke not long ago..... so, I need to know, will this fix my issues??? If so how do I do it?? If not any ideas on what I can / should do to fix it?? I have been trying in vain for weeks to get several hunting vids uploaded and I'm getting irritated and impatient. Thanks in advance and keep in mind I am NO computer whiz lol
Nope no porn, My kids use it primarily, I use it for trail cam pictures and hunting videos. Nice try though
Wish I could help, but I don't know a thing about computers anymore. I haven't even turned my laptop on since I got my iPad. Have you tried calling some sort of customer service?
I was just messing with ya. My son does the same thing. That is why he is banned from my Ipad mini and can only use the old IBM thinkpad. Wiping the hard drive and starting over might be all you can do, but it sounds like you have some serious malware issues.
what calebbob said about stop looking at pron... 1) no need to reload windows at this point. there are plenty of things to look at before doing something that drastic. the second fella who is pretty knowledgeable is probably not if that is the first thing he advised without looking at it. 2) you're trying to remove the mcafee product from add/remove programs, right? 3) what A/V product do you normally use? why in the world would you let your kids use your computer?!?!?!? I assume your internet at home is good in general and that this machine can get on the internet? other machines at home performing as expected and the issue is isolated to this machine? it probably just has a bunch of malware/crapware/etc on it and needs a good cleanup. are you getting popup ads? random website redirects? assuming it is a modern laptop and not a 8 year old POS to begin with...
I let the kids use it because I use my iPad primarily but I lost my card reader (ordered a new one that hasnt arrived) It is a lil older maybe 5 yrs??? Usually I can at least tether the iPad to the laptop and transfer the files but I can't even do that. PM replied, Thanks
It's not really McAfee. It's some kind of malware. It happened to my wife once. She ran our virus software but it didn't work. She tried to download new definitions but it wouldn't let her. Then she called me. Try this. 1- Close your browser. 2- Click on the Start button 3a- If you're using XP, click on "RUN" 4a- In the little box type in msconfig 3b- If you're using Windows 7 type in msconfig in the little box at the bottom 5- When the program comes up, select "System Restore." 6- Select a date prior to the malware appearance if possible. If you can't go back that far, you need more help than I can provide. 7- When system restore is complete, update your virus definitions and run your anti-virus software 8- This will restore a previous version of Windows. It won't change any data files, but you may have to reinstall any programs you installed after the restore date, since Windows wont recognize them. Windows won't recognize the malware either, but you still need to remove it.
If you get it fixed, I use a software called system mechanic and also Kaspersky pure and they keep mine safe and secure. SM will clean most anything and would fix your problem if you can get it to install. Walmart carries it in PC software as well as any decent electronics store.
Be for you do a restore I suggest running Malware Bites on the PC first. This may fix it Here is the link to down load it. Free trial version: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download
I strongly suggest you do a system restore FIRST if you can. The virus you have can corrupt and disable any ant-malware you install. No reason to fear the system restore. It's like a time machine for your computer. It will take it back to before the mal-ware infected it, if you can go back that far. After that you can run the anti-virus of your choice and eliminate the mal-ware. (It will still be there, it just won't have infected the registry yet.) Just like it won't recognize any programs you installed since the changes to the registry won't have happened yet. Think Time Travel.
Wait for you IT guy to be unsick. That's what I do. I have some good IT guys running around here. Helped me out more than once.
