So I like to watch all these bow hunting shows and I swear I always see the deer moving and the hunter makes a sound to stop the deer. I've never shot a deer with a bow so whats the deal? What sounds do you make if any?
On tuesday I pcked a lane I was going to shoot a doe through and as she got close I let out a "Mehh". that will stop most deer in their tracks. It did, she stopped right behind a tree. I had to wait until she continued forward and I picked a different lane and shot her there. "Bhapp." is another one that works. Otherwise you can whistle or say "hey". Most of the time I wait until they stop on their own.
I've had them stop for "meh" and a whistling has worked as well. Last years buck was MOVING. He came in out of nowwhere at 15 yds. I had enough time to "meh," and shoot. Did the trick.
Pay attention to their stature. I they're already skittish odds aren't good, if they're too focused odds aren't good. Doesn't mean it won't work though. Anything works, kiss at it, whistle, burp and whatnot. If they don't stop do it louder. I've yelled at a deer and it didn't flinch, just kept walking. Other times the slightest little bump/sound and they're white flagged to Mexico.
I had to let out a ''meh'' for my first bow kill last year. She stopped, looked up and I let the arrow fly. It seemed silly when I saw guys doing it on TV, but when the situation arose it worked like a charm.
It all depends on the situation. If it's really quiet and the deer is close I usually do a very soft whistle-like sound. Then again, I've had to yell "HEY!!" almost as loud as I could to stop a buck following a doe, and I've used quite a few other things in between those two extremes. It just depends...
I whistle to stop them. To me the "meh" or bleat sound can alarm deer sometimes but a soft whistle is more of a curious sound.
I only stop a deer if it's in thick stuff or about to go behind a tree. I prefer the calmness of a walking deer over one that has just been stopped and the shot is pretty easy. Just follow the animal while moving at the waist and pull through the shot. I will bahhh at one if the situation dictates. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk
I dont like to stop them unless I absolutely have to. Abotu 5 years age I had a buck charging hard after a doe and after 2-3 increasingly loud Mah's, I just yelled hey! He stopped and sits on my wall.
Like the last 2 posts, I have found if you hit the deer with a good shot and they are not alarmed, they seem to die closer with out running as far. If they were alarmed before the shot, it seems they have that adrenaline going and can go a little further.
yeah be careful, I did this to a buck that was casually walking down the road, and it put him on alert and he jumped the string. He was coming to a field edge that he would have stopped at anyway, so I should have been more patient.
When I stopped my doe on Tuesday I literally had two lanes and then she would be gone. I picked the first lane and had to switch to the second lane. It is true, alerted deer do seem to run further. I once had a calm buck stand at 45 yards while he bled out. I shot him at 30. so he old kicked and ran 15 yards before stopping and wondering what "bit" him. That was one of two times that happened.
They do that largely to get the best footage for their show. I don't alert a deer unless it is absolutely necessary.
I try to shoot them when they stop on there own, but that doesn't always work. The buck I killed in 2010 which was chasing a doe took about 30 meeehs to stop him, but boy did that ruin his evening.
I've never done it and probably won't do it. Don't like alarming things. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
I've probably shot more deer walking then standing still. I do prefer them standing still though. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
