I have a QAD ultrarest hdx (which I believe is the name of it) and at one time or another have used every arrow rest in the QAD line up and have loved every one of them. I have always used mine with the cock vane on my arrow in the up position just as the manufacturer's instructions call for. Now on to the question: I've been seeing more and more people shooting with their cock vane down. Is there any purpose in it? And regardless of which is the "correct" way of doing it...which way works better? All opinions are welcome.
Up is correct. No reason to shoot with it down. I can only assume that one's that shoot it down are just doing it out of habit from years of shooting prong style rest or they incorrectly think they get more clearance or they are contacting the bar with blazer style vanes. (If the latter is the case, they probably have a nock travel issue or the nock is set too high)
The only reason to shoot with the cock vane in a certain position is to avoid contact with the rest, if you are dealing with a Drop away rest, it does not matter. Aerodynamically, the forces are spread equally on all 3 vanes, regardless of their position...
I shoot with the cock feather pointed away from the riser. That's how I shot it from recurves, from the L-shaped hunt master 2000 rest, a double prong rest... and now QAD rests. My feathers won't make contact with the rest but the do brush against the cables if I don't tweak the nock a bit.
I always aim the cock vane away from the riser as well. I use a NAP Apache but plan on switching to the QAD.
