I started a little discussion or argument the other day with some friends that hunt in the area as me. I took a shoot at a ten pointer and missed. Several guy were mad saying I shouldn't have taken the shot. I think they're jealous, however the discussion/argument started over what the buck will do Some guys said he gone and will not come back to the area other said gave him time and he'll be back. Want to know what the Forum thinks. Is the buck gone for good or will he be back.
How did he react after the shot? What kind of pressure does the area get? I shot over a nice 10 last year on Halloween. 7 days later I had him in front of me less than 80 yards from where I missed him.
What was the situation with the shot you took? Why do they think you should not have taken the shot? What did the deer do?
Next time don't tell them you took a shot and missed. Thats part of hunting sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss so whats the big deal about it. I'm sure if they would of seen the buck they would have shot at him.
When I was 14 I hit a nice 8 pt. in the shoulder and we couldn't find him. A week to the day I saw him out of the same tree stand in the daylight. I'm not going to say that a buck always sticks in his area or he always goes nocturnal but my Dad told me something that sort still stays true to me. The only thing predictable about a whitetail is that they're unpredictable. No reason to argue over it because nobody knows for sure.
I'm glad I took the shot. The other guy I hunt with said I should have let him walk. I'm mad that I missed, but the buck jumped like I hit him then ran off. I found my arrow but no blood just track running in to the darkness.
You have not explained why they thought you should not have shot. Was it a long shot? Was it getting dark? Was it a poor shot angle? What gives....
Exactly my thoughts. I don't know many places with self imposed restrictions which would mean passing on a 10 pointer....pretty rare to have a small or tiny 10 pointer...so I rule out the caliber of the buck is the issue. Was it too far of a shot? Was it a terrible angle? Was it well after visible light had passed? Was it a walking/running shot?
Why I missed is not the question. Will he be back? That's the question. I've got a million reason why I missed, hell I could make up a couple just for fun. I am hoping he'll be back most here have more experience then me. plus the collective experience is off the chart. I didn't hit him, he jumped, he ran it's that easy and simple.
Well, that collective experience is trying to find out more details so they can better answer your question. The details of the miss can have effect on the likelihood of you seeing the buck. Nothing is easy and simple when trying to figure out the forecasted behavior of a whitetail buck.
He will be back I smoked my first buck and the arrow didn't have a drop of blood on it I thought I heard him c rash so I snuck out and got my brother I found him 60 yards from where I shot him no blood on the ground here the intestings plugged the hole
It is obvious most of us would agree with his buddies....that is the only explanation as to why he won't say
Wrong. Dont come here to ask questions if you think you already know all the answers. Good luck to you, it seems you may need it.
I'm wondering why you're "glad you took the shot", if you missed and possibly scared him into the next county?? Sorry, but no one here can tell you if he's going to be back or not.
He will be back, don't pressure the stand. Give it a week or two. I recommend running a game cam. I promise that if you give it time and leave the area alone, he will be back. Happy hunting
