I have heard that mechanical/expandable broadheads are not reliable for the quartering away shot, so what broadheads are reliable for those shots? because imo that broadhead will be reliable for any shot, what say you?

The Shwacker doesnt have any problems with quartering shots. Hank Parker said so.

I'm with Bruce on this one...

I've shot fixed-blade Muzzys for the last five years or so, but before that I took at least 25 whitetails with mechs (mostly Rocket Aerohead, but some others as well including NAP Spitfires and Rage), from all different angles to include slightly quartering to sharper quartering shots.

I never had a problem with a head not opening for me... not one.

I witnessed It 4 years ago 1st hand. My brother had wounded a doe and we were tracking her going on 7 hours. Me and another guy were walking side by side looking for blood when he nudges me and says quietly, there she Is. He draws his compound back and his 2 blade Rage tipped arrow. She was quartering away sharp but still easily a makable shot that I've made myself before. I watched as his arrow hit the last rib right where It should've. Instead of going In It sliced the whole side of the deer from the last rib past It's front shoulders. Never have I saw such a slice from a BH In my life. There was blood everywhere. The BH did open when It hit the rib. After he shot, I looked at him and just shook my head. He couldn't believe It either. I then said If that fricking Rage cost's us this deer I'm going to be pissed!! He no longer shoots expandables after this ordeal. Is this a common thing, I have no clue but my eye's didn't lie. My guess Is In this situation I saw that If he would've shot a little farther back and hit behind the rib the Rage would've went In then. Good old reflection one could say when It hit the bone at the sharp angle.

An hour later we got the doe after getting another arrow In her but this time with a lung shot.

All I can say is this Spitfire, as Greg mentioned, seemed to open just fine on this New Years Eve deer. Not the most radical angle, but an angle none the less. It was a blood bath leading up to deer. That bolt just pierced the chest at the far arm pit (exit) after going through the heart. I shoot Muzzys with my compound though.

I've shot caribou and deer at pretty good quartering away angles without issue with the Spitfire 125's.

Yep, I told this same story on HNI when the same question was asked In a thread there. Anikka or whatever the heck his name Is jumped all over me telling me I was full of It and no way possible could that happen. I told him straight out I could care less about Rages or what anyone shoots but my eye's do not lie.

I can't say anything about mech. heads......... I've never shot one. I've always had good luck at all angles with my fixed blades.

When you have a mech blade if the tip is too close to the blade where it opens...it has a better chance of deflection...if the tip is further away from the blade it gets the chance to dig into the deer and keep going on its path...thats what i shoot grim reapers =] like my montecs more tho

It can happen with a fixed head, too.

Oh yeah, Annika... What did you expect from the VP of marketing and part owner of Rage broadheads, LOL.

    I definitely believe you Steve.

My friend's dad was furious at Rage a couple years ago after he had a similar incident.

He was hunting from a ground blind when a "big 12" came in. He said he drew back, had a sharp-quartered away shot, and the arrow deflected. The buck ran away with little harm.

His left over Rage's were given away and he bought a couple packs of Montecs.

I've had 2 packs of Rage broadheads given to me for gifts, but I just can't talk myself into shooting them. Maybe this coming season I'll give them a try, but I don't know!

I've taken my past 4 bucks with Rages. Work fine for me. IDK if I'll always shoot them, but I see no current reason to change yet.

Knock their marketing all you want with "expand your killzone" but these bigger cuts really do help IMO with fudged shots. Doesn't make the shots suddenly acceptable lethal shots, but if you happen to pull on a shot, the extra cutting width helps if you have the bow/arrow combo to punch it through.

I've had a complete pass through on all 4 bucks as well. One went as far as breaking/severing the front shoulder in HALF, lol.
