I had been shopping for a bow for my son and just purchased a used Bowtech fuel. I haven't received it yet but per the description it has been shot about 200 times. Is that a lot for a bow? Should I be prepared to replace strings or cables soon? Also, my sons draw length is 22.5" and weight is about 30lbs but I will probably turn it down to about 25 or so if I can for the first week. What length and weight arrows would be good for this set up? Feel free to recommend specific arrows that are not expensive as I'm sure a few will be lost or broken at first. Thanks.
200 shots is not a lot. The condition of the strings will have to be determined after seeing them. As to what draw length, weight etc. those would have to be determined in your son's hands.
Congrats on the Bowtech. My best recommendation would be to take it to a local bow shop to have them check it out and adjust it to a proper draw length and weight. They can also tell you what arrow length will be needed and should be able to cut them to the proper size and everything for you. And no 200 shots is very minimal. I easily shoot that many arrows a month when the weather is good and getting ready for turkey or deer season.
Oh, yeah I took him to shop and they determined his length and draw weight. 22.5" and 30lbs but the 30lbs was a tad bit on the heavy side.
Ask them. If they checked his draw length and poundage, they could certainly recommend arrows. In the beginning, quality arrows are not necessary and most shops have an inexpensive line. I'd start there, locally.
Sorry Elkguide. Probably should have just let you respond instead of trying to think what you meant. They didn't recommend arrows? Well you can choose a ton of different arrows. If his draw length is 22.5 the arrows should be no less than 23 and maybe up to 25 inches in length. If you make them 25 he can use them a little longer as he grows. My arrows are 1/2 inch longer than my draw.
Thank you Hillbilly Jedi, I purchase a lot of stuff from the shop but it's not exactly local I only go there a few times a year. I would like to order some before the bow comes in. They don't sell Bowtech and I'm not even sure they would work on it. There is a shop that does sell them but it's a bit farther away. The bow should be in perfect working condition but I will take it to a shop and have them check it out.
No worries. I shoot Gold Tip arrows. Lots of Easton and Carbon Express shooters out there too. They are all good arrows and most of their websites should have some info to help you decide on what arrow to choose. I've also emailed Carbon Express before telling them what I currently shoot and asked what was their comparable arrow. They got back to me within a day or two. I bet if you send them an email with what you're looking for they could recommend a good arrow that won't break your budget. The bow will be accurate so if your boy takes to it well, I don't think he'll loose too many. About 6 bails of hay for a backstop will help too! Good luck!
I'm sure he will. Getting up close and personal with an animal is a rush he'll never forget. I grew up hunting and then took a long time off from it. Archery got me back into it and man it's been amazing!
