I found a load of these things, it appears that they ARE edible, supposedly pretty decent, any of you guys ever eat one, or know anything about them??? The one I brought home today is about the size of a women's basketball, nice and WHITE, no discoloration yet, any recommendations or ideas???
They are Incredibly good!!! I don't know much about mushrooms but my dad Is big Into picking mushrooms out In the woods. While bear hunting this year he found 2 puffballs the size of basketballs, we ate them both up at camp. We cooked them a few different ways. One way was dip them In egg and then coat them In fry magic and then sprinkle some parmesan cheese on them and fry them up In some grease. We cut them In patties about 1/2 Inch thick, they were big patties!! The other way we cooked them on a grate over the fire with the same coating, both ways were excellent. As long as their white and not soft/mushy like I think your good to go. Be careful with picking mushrooms though, I don't know enough to really give any advice on this subject.
Like Steve, my dad picks alot of mushrooms. Ive had it before, but it wasn't "awesome". Could have been how he prepared i though. Be careful with any native fungus you pick, alot are deadly.
Don't eat the one's you find in a cow pasture that look like they have a nipple on top!! Unless of course you want to be found roaming said cow pasture butt naked 2 days later looking for more. (Did I just say that?) Well, I had a friend....:D
Sauteed them up in butter, but not my cup of tea!!! A little slimy, taste is ok, but sort of like a snotball in the consistency. Worth a try, unfortunately not something I'll go after again. Thanks for the input.
Yup they are good, as long as you get em in the white phase :D There are a bunch of good edible mushrooms, I really like oyster mushrooms! And of course, morels are my favorite! Just toss em in some flour salt and pepper, then saute em in butter....mmmmm
