Most of the truly successful people in the private sector that I know didn't get that way and STAY that way by slowing down or micromanaging.
I guess one could say the same that, yes. What percentage of small businesses makes it through the first two years without shutting down?
Brett: The only thing I'm in favor of....is privatizing a LOT more jobs. WOuld that mean a pay cut for a lot of folks? Sure. Would it mean a pay increase for a lot of folks? Sure. I don't look down my nose at public sector employees. Would be pretty stupid, since I make less than most. I just wonder how they think the status-quo can be maintained in today's economy. Fair wage for a fair product/service delivered. And, adhere to a budget, regardless of sector. That's fair, huh? Public sector jobs sometimes NEVER adhere to a budget. Yet, they don't risk going out of business in the 1st two years.
I did not say slow down and I actually said that NY should delegate his powers over to other people, thereby NOT micromanaging. Macromanaging.
Jeff, to be honest with you, most of what you say economically on a philosophical level I agree with most of the time. And I agree with your above sentiments. I am all about paying the right person to the job in the most efficient manner. And frankly we are not doing that today in the public sector. It is inherent in our growing local, state, and federal governments. But to say that people in the public sector are just plain lazy and stupid is ridiculous. I know many lazy and stupid people that do just fine in the private sector. What percentage of small businesses make it through year two?
If those people that he's delegating the power to don't have a personal interest in what's at stake or they simply do not have the same ability as NY, he's the one losing. Holy crap......I concur 100%.
I sure hope I didn't say that (or project those thoughts). I have no idea how many private sector businesses fail. I just hope I'm not one of them....lol. But, I don't have the safety net the public sector start-up does. If they end up their year in the red, they just request more. I shut my doors. Different rules. My bottom line/sustainability is a direct correlative to the effort/quality of my product. I wish the public sector played by the same rule.
If he is a great manager or talent finder then he should either be able to find good employees or develop them in his image. That is what a great leader is able to consistently accomplish.
Brett: Using the example of NY being a good manager.......isn't taxpayers questioning the public sector an example of being just that (if their questions are valid)? After all, it's their money.
Jeff, I am a taxpayer as well and I question the stupid decisions of my government all the time. I welcome the scrutiny. However, I do not believe managers or employees in the private sector to be any more educated or intelligent than their counterparts in the public sector. That was all I am saying, nothing more, nothing less. I am not defending anyone in the public sector who deserves criticism. I am talking about people with elitist and condescending attitudes in general.
Brett: FTR......there's a price in which I would do your job (if I was remotely qualified). My guess is, they aren't paying that wage. You have my utmost respect.
Thank you Jeff. You have mine as well. I believe there to be much waste in the government, I see it every day. It needs to be cleaned up. I spoke out about it for years in my place of work. They told me "that is just the way it is". I didn't buy it then and I do not buy it now. I am a fiscal conservative and many of the things they do in our local government and school system are just plain wasteful. The people that make and accept those wasteful decisions need to be terminated.
Spoken from a public sector person. Just pay someone to do what you're supposed to be doing? Gotcha. That's exactly the difference thanks for proving my point further. For the record I manage companieS. And believe me I don't need a ,management lesson from anyone. I get the ole saying a good manager is letting other people do their work for them. Well.... that's peachy on fantasy island. In the real world it's not all that simple. I dont' think they are either. It's just a total different ballgame when you're playing with your own money and your own risks. There is no back up plan. You win or loose.
I get a kick on how easy some like to throw others under the bus. Atlas NJ sitution is funny, becasue for the past 13 years NJ state has not lived up to their end of the contract they signed. If they had, there would not be an issue. NJ state caused it's own issue for signing a deal they could honor.
Thank you! That's the biggest difference and it changes EVERYTHING! And you'll never "get it" unless you live it.
I've been on both sides of the fence here. Prior to me being self employed I worked for the government. I worked for the county for 5 years.
