Hey Guys and gals. I've got some questions if anyone can help that world be great. Hunting public land this year and I only get 2 days of scouting a week before a 9 day hunt. Does anyone have any tips on going into this hunt pretty much blind?

If you understand maps and how deer use terrain you can put yourself in good spots without setting foot on the property. I go in blind a lot and have success, it gets easier the more experience you have. If you want to send me a map or a location so i can look at maps I'll give you my opinion of spots if you'd wish.

Thanks. The area is very large. It's the Aransas wildlife refuge here in South Texas. I've been using Google earth to get a look at the propriety. Only 36225 ac will be used for hunting

Texas is a completely different animal than most other states. You won't be able to tell much from a satellite view, and it's most likely flat as board in that area so topo will be tough also. Scouting would be your best bet.

Im going to keep looking over the maps but may have to eat crow on this one. This appears to be coastal flood plane which I can't claim to relate too being an upper Midwest guy. Was looking at it through the eyes of a marsh hunter but what looks like trails in the area are not as the lines that look like trails avoid the high ground which a deer would not do. I'm going to keep studying but may not be much help in this terrain.

Well I've heard it's the hardest bow hunt in Texas. I'll just have to see and thank your time.

    What is the hunting pressure?

And can you use a boat to get to a spot?

400 hunters in 36000 acres all within 9 days. This is my first time hunting public land so I'm not sure. I've been fortunate enough to have always hunt on private land but luck runs out sometimes.

Does it have a decent sized deer population and what time of the season will your hunt take place? early/late/rut?

TJ, I don't hunt areas like that at all. However I do like looking at topo/aerial maps and trying to figure stuff out.

    I used mapper.acme.com

Just take the coordinates I am listing below and enter them into the box at the bottom of the screen on mapper.acme. com or whatever program you desire. Just some thoughts.
