I finally got two moultrie m80's, heavy duty boxes, locks and cables. My theory is this, I pack in my stuff, a telescoping ladder and mineral blocks. Get in deep and find a good spot, climb a tree and strap my cams ten foot or so up, downward facing under a limb. I'm thinking worse case scenario someone takes the time to bring a ladder in too and saw the branch off, seems like a ton of work for a cheap camera.
I'd like to start now just to see what's out there and move my set ups as the spring/summer progresses so come September 15th I can be closer to where all the action is.
    Anyone else tried public cams?
Any advice or feed back on these lofty ideas of mine ?

Hide it good, but, people also know you will be hiding it good.

I use two sections of my climbing sticks on private ground here. But you will lose you cams on public land there are people steal just to steal and show you that you they could do it.

If you put your cams high then you will fair much better although it is still playing with fire. I personally wouldn't do it my self but good luck.

Sad to say someone will do it. OR WORSE yet....1 or 2 - 12 gauge shells are cheap. I had mine shot once (& on private land).

Well "where they are now" won't help you in September, it will help you next January though.

I usually put my cam back up in June/July which gives me a good 2 months to pattern.

Just hide them well. I have 2 cams out on public for the past 2 years solid and not issues with mine. Just very deep and out of sight.

It is illegal here in illinois to put them out on public land but every year I keep hearing about people complaining how they got stolen.

Up high trees....In stone walls.... way out of the way. Only you can decide if its worth the extra effort it will take and the possible losses.
Also I have and know guys that have use them on public lands way back in with good results.......I hate to say it but if a hunter is willing to bust is *** and hump way back in they are going to less likely to take another mans camera.....The difficulty factor tends to weed out some of the undesirable types.

I'm going to do the same thing here in Md at 2 spots that I favor.. Planning on getting used or real cheap new Cams and put them out come June and July.... My opinion if you go way back in and put them up higher then normal and someone still steals them... Then more power to them.... Still stinks but what can you do....

Best of luck to you and keep us updated with pics....

I've been using cams on public ground for my years now, and only had 1 stolen. I placed it close to a parking area without a lock or chain. It was a cheap wildview that I didn't like anyway. Been using a small chain with lock. So far so good. I get pics of other hunters so I know they knew it was there. Elk Wallow 2013.jpg 11-19-2013 Cemetary Ridge.jpg
