Anybody know of good land to hunt in the Northern Region of IL? This year I realized I over hunted my little piece and looking for some new space. I ask now because it is the most effective time to scout in my opinion since its easier to locate bedding areas etc... Thanks.

McHenry county has some public land you can hunt, but you have to pay to hunt. You are looking at $375-600 (out of county early-bird price) and don't expect to hunt the properties your first year as there are a TON of hunters that apply and qualify for these limited properties. I hunt private land bordering one of the MCCD properties and 2 of the 3 hunters on the MCCD land were WI residents. Here is a link: http://www.mccdistrict.org/web/re-hunting-general.htm

Lake County has some outstanding land with some huge bucks, but I am not sure how you go about accessing those properties. Good luck!

Well unfortunately in lake county unless its private land you can hunt, or your a hired sharpshooter on public land you won't get a deer in the county.

I hunt on a little piece of state land in Winnebago county that is archery deer only, not sure it would be worth your drive. It's only about 130 acres but there is definitely deer on it and not many people know about it or hunt on it so it's kind of like my own little hunting spot. The last couple days of the season last week I did walk by a tripod stand that the DNR had set up for a sharp shooter to come in and kill deer at night. So not sure how good the hunting will be next year. I still don't understand why they don't let us hunters kill those deer?

It baffles me that this state dose the crap they do. They could save so much money just letting the hunters that would love to hunt the land control the population. But no they feel its necessary to hire sharp shooters to do it instead of letting the tax paying people do it. I am a resident of lake county and it angers me that unless i find private land and get permission to hunt it I must go to another county just to hunt! Lake county has so much land that is state and county preserve but you cant do a dam thing on it. Ok well I'm now pissed off enough that I will end my rant. I'm tired of the BS this state dose!

    I agree

I agree completely! I can't even think about it or I just end up pissed and frustrated. Can't tell you how happy I was when I walked up on that tripod stand. Unbelievable!

I'm with you buddy. My 'ol man just told me yesterday that there is a elevated blind in a field next to the land we hunt in McHenry county along the Kishwaukee River. I am not confident that it is the DNR sharpshooters again or not, though. After I harvested a 10 pointer in Nov '09 the DNR set-up in the same field for 3 months (Jan-March). I never was able to find out how many deer were harvested, but I have not seen a deer during the archery season since on the property we hunt so my assumption is that the herd was nearly eradicated in that area. I'm going to cry now....

Im in Mchenry County. In my opinion, those payed hunts on public land are NOT worth it and The Chain O Lakes sucks because you cant hunt it on the weekends...

Yea the only way I would pay to hunt is to lease land or if I was hunting with an outfitter. There is no way in hell I would pay to hunt public land! Especially public land in the state I live in! I agree that the chain sucks with the schedule they have but we are unfortunately limited in our choices around here.

I have been dealing with the same issue for the last several years. My closest place to hunt is 2 hours away but hoping to change that very soon but I know it is gonna cost me. And I totally agree about the Chain I don't even try anymore.
