Does anyone have any good recommendations on good Public deer hunting land in Kentucky that they wouldn't mind sharing with me?

I hunted Kentucky in September on some private land that didn't go very well and also hunted a morning on Public hunting land at Peabody WMA.

That said, I have a tag that needs filled and am hoping to make a weekend trip down to Kentucky in the next 2 months and I am looking for a good public hunting location! Hopefully someone can help me.

    Thanks!

If you do your home work and don't mind a little punishment I think Daniel Boone national forest is a gorgeous place to hunt in the fall and there are some good deer too. It's over 600k acres of hills. In my opinion all the WMAs in KY are about the same as far as the quality of deer you will find.

The same being good or bad or indifferent just depends on place and time??

Thanks for your response - I've done some research online just seeing if any folks could point me to a good spot - not that anyone would want to tell anyone about a good public hunting spot, that wouldn't make a whole lotta sense. Lol

I mean, they all have a lot of pressure, but are capable of producing a good buck if you scout and hit them at the right time.

I can help you with a general area to give you some thought. My dad has taking over my great grandmas house in the county of Harlan, Kentucky and ive been going there since ive been around, 22 years now and we mainly go down there 5 times a year. Once in the spring to open up the house and then three times a summer all at least 2 weeks at a time and then for labor day weekend to close up the house. It kills me every year because on are property we have some really nice bucks and they don't get hunted so the only threat they have are the semis speeding through the mountain. I don't have the time to hunt down there yet because im a college student. Ive seen some huge bucks up on the old strip jobs in harlan county and the rest of the surrounding county's they just don't have enough hunters around the area to take them all out. They also have some giant Elk and Black Bear to!. Also im not sure if you can hunt Kingdom Come State park or not but they have some giant bucks to. But yeah you might say to your self this is coming from a 22 year old but trust me i see it all down there i know those mountains pretty well. Yes it may be out in the middle of no where but im pretty sure thats why i see so many giants because no one wants to go that far for there being so little as in restaurants, Businesses, Etc. Not much around besides Mountains, woods, woods, woods, coal, more woods, and more woods. So like i said Harlan county has some nice deer and plenty of public land. Hope this helps you some!

Thanks Bauer - when we went to Kentucky in September we were down near Fleming-Neon and Whitesburg. To this day I have no idea how someone hunts those mountains. I am from Indiana and it's pretty flat in my part of the state! Lol

Thanks for the advice, I will keep it in mind for the future. It sure is great country side down that way - no doubt!

The hardest part about hunting in the mountains isn't just the climb up them but the wind. In the flat part of western Ky where I hunted for 15 yrs in a row it was much easier, if the wind can be easy that is. The wind seems to blow in one direction. IN the mtns it will change directions at the drop of the hat and on top of all that you have the thermals. Where the wind will rise up as the day warms and down as it cools. Makes hunting in the mtns hard. For that same reason though some of the biggest bucks are here and when you get one it's a monster.

No problem! If you do hunt those mountains best way to get around is Atv just keep that in mind too. A lot easier to get an Atv unstuck rather than a truck or car up there haha!
