Pro shop "experts" can be irritating.

In the Technical forum I discussed my plans to increase my arrow weight from 450 grains to a little over 500 grains by adding a 50 grain weight up front and also switching from a standard nock to a pin nock adapter/pin nock. A 500+ grain arrow with a 15.9% FOC sounds like, as brucelanthier said, an "unstoppable and very forgiving" setup.

So I first try to find the Gold Tip components I need at my two local shops. First I called the shop I bought my arrows from. He no longer carries Gold Tip arrows. He asked me what I was looking for and I made the mistake of telling him. I knew it was a mistake as soon as the words left my mouth. He preaches speed, speed, speed. Okay, okay. After listening to a 2 minute sermon on how deer will jump the string on slower arrows and why you need a lighter, faster arrow I finally got off the phone.

I then called the second shop and asked if they carried pin nock adapters for Gold Tip Pro Hunter 7595's. First, the guy that answers the phone tells me that Gold Tip doesn't make them. Huh? I informed him that they have them listed on thier website. Then he asks if I want them for target shooting or hunting. I reply "both". He then tells me he's never heard of that and can't understand why anyone would want to put any weight at all on the "ass end" of their hunting arrow.

So I proceed to explain to this guy what my ultimate goal is and I also inform him that a standard Gold Tip nock weighs 11.5 grains, a pin nock adapter and a pin nock together only weigh 17.7 grains, and that's an increase of only 6.1 grains. The total is still less than most lighted nocks. Besides, I am adding 50 grains up front. I think he finally got it, but I was done. This is the same place that told me three years ago that I was getting too "scientific" when I asked questions about FOC percentage.

I placed my order online with Gold Tip and should be getting my components Thursday.

Most people don't understand that the average person working in a "pro" shop wandered in off the street looking for a $7 an hour job... Or worse yet, it's someone who knows what a bow and arrow sort of look like, and think that qualifies them for the job... :(

I could tell you stories because of all the shops I go in for my job and/or writing career... such as the one who was promoting to go to a 75-grain head because the guy's sights were set too high (that would mean more speed, and his arrows would hit higher, LOL) Never mind what it did to his spine, or that the guy said he wanted to keep shooting 100-grain field points... (Can I still do that? Suuuuure! :) )

Deer jumping the string? Funny... until we figure out a way to beat the speed of sound, there's not much we're going to be able to do about it...

Well, except quieting the bow down with a heavier arrow that retains more momentum and absorbs more released energy from the bow which would quieten the shot down to the point it wouldn't scare the deer half to death as if an explosion occurred next to it... Nah, that wouldn't work.

I never ever tell a pro shop anymore what it is I am doing or why I am doing it. I simply say do you have what I am looking for or not? If they don't, I look elsewhere.

Quite honestly, buying stuff off the internet is just so much easier.

Oh come on. You've got to admit that it's a little entertaining, in a sick and twisted kind of way. It never ceases to amaze me some of the things I overhear in "pro" shops.

And, when compared to my local "pro" shop, much cheaper.

I tried to explain this exact thing once to someone last year by telling them to imagine they were staring out a window deep in thought. If I sneak up behind them and softly say "hey" it might startle them a bit but they'll turn around to see who said something. If I sneak up behind them and scream at the top of my lungs there's a good chance they'll go through the window trying to get away from whatever made that noise.

Ya but... but ... but..... the arrow will arrive at the deer 0.0001597536 seconds faster. :p

Faster is more. More is better. Therefore faster must be better. It's simple high school level logic Brad. You must've skipped class that day. :D

I have to agree with all of the points brought up. It seems like every time I go into my local shop to ask for something I get the “What do you want that for? This or that is so much better then what you’re looking for.” I’m starting to think that “Pro Shops”, if we can even call them that anymore, are hiring all the out of work used car salesmen out there. And don’t even get me started with the prices they charge for some of the crap they sell.

I've often wondered about that though. My current 450 grain arrows move at 270 fps. That means on a 30 yard shot the arrow takes one third of a second to get there. Even if you add another 90 fps to get 360 fps it would take one quarter of a second to get to the target. Even at Mathews Monster IBO speed the arrow will only get there 0.083 seconds ahead of my slow, heavy arrow. Eight hundredths of a second! I think I'm on the right path when you add the benefit of a quiet shot that doesn't make the deer jump out of it's skin.

If I'm wrong I guess I'll just have to have faith that these "southern" deer are a little slow... :D

I just realized my mistake on my original post. It was Brucelanthier that said it would be an "unstoppable and very forgiving" arrow setup. Sorry about that Bruce.

Yeah, but the 15.9% FOC was my figure... but it's probably Bruce's too... seems like a lot of us old codgers tend to think that way after a few decades at this stuff. ;)

I know, Greg, but it's also what my FOC % will come out to be according to the Gold Tip website. I guess I'm an old codger too though... :)

Cool. I'll shoot you an e-mail to see if you can get me some replacement blades for my Slick Trick 125 Magnums. I got them from you last year, but this year the web store always says you only have them for Grizztrick 2 and Razortrick. :)
