I simply is not punishment enough and the only time its effective is when we never let them out. How many times do we have to hear "He has an extensive criminal record" ?

Whats the answer? Whats enough deterrent? Should we banish them to an island some where, beat them, starve them, or even force them to listen to rap music?

Incarceration is simply to expensive and frankly in effective, where do we need to go?

IMO the incarceration isn't the issue. Its the quality of life that they have while incarcerated. Our prison system is way to lenient when dealing with things. It seems the prisoners have more rights than the CO's at times. I honestly feel that our prison system just isn't harsh enough to seem as a serious deterrent for many.

There needs to be a strong enough deterrent to make people think twice about their actions. Honestly, our legal system and prison system are not that in any way. We give way too many chances. Public hangings, beheading's, stonning's, lashings all used to do well to deter people from crimes. Perhaps we should move back in that direction.

It is really very simple to fix. The punishment has to fit the crime! 1. If you rape a woman or molest a child, you should be castrated! You never have to worry about them doing it again. 2. If you are caught stealing, cut off a hand. They steal more than once, they have nothing else to steal with. 3. If you rob or hurt an elderly or handicapped person, put their eyes out. Make them feel as helpless as their victim. Any other felonies, re-institute HARD LABOR and make them bust rocks, haul gravel or stones all day.

But, I am a Black Republican. This may seem extreme to some!

^^^^ AGREED 100%. Even if they get the death penalty. That takes years, those years are paid for by the tax payers. For them too sit on there A$$es eating 3 meals a day an watching cable tv. Like Simon/ OH previously stated prisons are not prisons. They are a flippin daycare.

Last I heard it costs this country $80,000 per inmate to house them for 1 year. I am single father of 2 trying to save for a wedding and preparing to be a dad to 5 and husband. I bust my *** every day and would kill to make that kind of money but instead a large portion of my income is going to provide a nice life for those who don't deserve a life to begin with.

In 2007, around $74 billion was spent on corrections.[98] The total number of inmates in 2007 in federal, state, and local lockups was 2,419,241.[19] That comes to around $30,600 per inmate.

In 2005, it cost an average of $23,876 dollars per state prisoner. State prison spending varied widely, from $45,000 a year in Rhode Island to $13,000 in Louisiana.[14][96]

In California in 2008, it cost the state an average of $47,102 a year to incarcerate an inmate in a state prison. From 2001 to 2009, the average annual cost increased by about $19,500.[99]

In 2003 among facilities operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, it cost $25,327 per inmate.[100]

The only thing that is going to help our darn country in this regard is real simple.....men need to start acting like men. Hold kids and other adults accountable for their actions instead of being so sissified and not doing anything. The men of our society have weakened and therefore our society has suffered.

Hows the old joke go? Prisoners should be placed in nursing homes and the elderly should go to prisons?

I thought i read that death row inmates cost over a million a year to house...please tell me this isnt true.

What we are doing now does not work, I see nothing wrong with castration for rapist or child molesters.
