I see these things pop up on eBay pretty often. I've seen flint, obsidian, bone... screw in and tied. I'm curious if anyone here has ever used them or if anyone WOULD use them. If so, how well did they work?

Diamond Infinite Edge. I'm not actually considering trying them out, I'm just curious about them.

Yes, I killed a doe with a flint head, self bow and every thing else that I made. Missed two does before I finally connected. 1st shot was a gut shot. After a 6 hour track, the 2nd shot was in the hip. After a two hour track, the 3rd shot was a one lung but she still didn't go down right away. :-( I did get that doe in the end, I then vowed I would never do that again.

The fact that I made/did it all myself. If the **** hit the fan tomorrow in the middle of nowhere and I had nothing, I know I could have a deer on the ground in just a couple days to feed the family.

I would definitely consider trying it. I would like to do what gri22ly did, make my own primitive bow, arrows and points. I have yet to attempt to build a primitive bow, but here are a few of the points I've made within the last 6 months.

Gri22ly and Bear - you both have an excellent point. I never really considered it that way. I'll admit I thought they were a bit ridiculous, but after hearing the two of you weigh in, I'm a little more inclined to take them seriously. I'm still not sure I would ever try them myself, but I DO have more respect for them.

Btw Bear, those are some great looking arrowheads!

They are not for modern equipment. They are for traditional and primitive bows. I killed a doe with a hickory selfbow, bamboo arrow, flint head, and hand chopped turkey feathers. I have also killed deer with more "modern" recurves and arrow broadhead combos. I did once miss a deer shooting trade points I made (homemade heads made from flat steel). I never did make a kill with those though. I never took pictures of my kills during my primitive and traditional phase, I wish now I would have. I am back to compounds after two back surgeries I need a bow with let off. It can be quite the challenge and takes a different mindset, but it is very rewarding.

There's no reason why you compound folks can't use one. Some day I will use one. I think there neat as heck.

My dad killed a moose with a compound, carbon arrow, and a 150grn flint head that he knapped. Flew spot on out to 40

How did he attach it to the arrow? Not like you can knap screw in threads haha.

My dad had a friend make him a bow out of an Osage Orange tree from dads land. He then made arrows fletched with turkey feathers from birds he killed on his land. He made broadheads from antlers of a buck he’d shot. Then he went out and killed a doe with that setup. He’s pretty proud of that kill.

He attached it to an ash footing which was then attached to a a piece of thread-all for the insert.

The more I think about it, the more I want to do something completely ridiculous, like going after coyote with a composite bow and primitive arrows.
