http://www.boston.com/Boston/metrod...y-bodycheck/1767z5PiWklm9SeEdFkX2O/index.html What is this world coming to? A kid gets hit hard and with an elbow, which happens in almost every hockey game, and he gets charged with assault....Absolutely ridiculous...I don't know I don't think it's that bad do you??????
and a hard but clean hit...parents shouldn't let thier kid play hockey if he can't keep his head up and watch his own @$$. Its like coming to a stop sign, stopping but failing to look both ways, pulling out and getting t-boned - whose fault is it. That freakin case shouldn't even make into the courtroom.
Totally agree with you it's hockey as soon as you put your equipment on and step on the ice you realize this stuff happens now your going to worry about getting charged with a crime if you hit someone too high or in the head with a full helmet and cage on!!!!!!!!!What if you hit someone in the head with a slap shot and they get hurt would it be considered using a weapon? Where does it end its a aggressive sport there is going to be injuries!!!!!
Well... hockey is something you accidentally step into in a pasture in Alabama. I watched the video and here's my un-biased opinion. The hit came after the shot, there was no play on the puck for the boy making the hit. He should have been penalized for the hit if that is a violation of the rule within the confines of the game. As far as criminal charges go... c'mon, I got hit harder than that dozens of times per game playing football. It's just part of the sport. The hit did seem, to me, a bit of an unecessary free shot for a player that was likely coached to take it if you get it. That's a coaching issue perhaps but I agree... shut up and skate or take up a nicer sport like curling.
Kids shouldn't be allowed to get into a pillow fight with that kid. Maybe his parents should invest their time and energy into a sport that has minimal contact something like..... Checkers or Hopscotch.
Illegal hit, yes. Crime, no. This is my favorite part of the article... “Apparently there was no penalty called on this particular play,” said Paul Wetzel, an MIAA spokesman, who added, “It could be that the [referees] didn’t see the incident.”
The referee seemed to be watching pretty closely (see 05-07 of video) and didn't call a penalty. Have charges actually been filed? The article's author seems to be using "lawyerspeak" pretty clearly. You've got to question the source of her information. Been there on that one, playing it out in the media to test the response before charges get filed, just to test the waters. Here's what happens. (my prediction) The criminal charges get set aside, the boy's parents file civil charges against referees, coaches, MIAA etc... it gets settled out of court for an undetermined amount.
Thats why the quote is funny to me. Two referees missed an easy call. To suggest they didn't see it is ridiculous. A raised forearm to the head is a penalty all day, at any level.
Agreed, that's why I used the term "lawyerspeak." In sports, players often judge their actions by what the officials allow. I am taking a guess, the game was ruled by a host of non-calls. One big example is the Hardaway "Killer Crossover" in basketball. It would have been ruled traveling or palming in my day. Now, because it has been allowed, it is common. In baseball, pitchers try to find the ump's strike zone to determine what they can get away with. The referees will get included in the coming lawsuit for failing to exercise control of the game. IMO, we'd be better off in this world with no lawyers.
Imagine what happens to all high school sports from here on out if this family wins the case. That family and the lawyer are what's wrong with this country. Sadly, it's going more and more in that direction.
I have to completely disagree there. Hardaway's crossover consisted of a slow crossover and between the legs dribble, followed by a quick crossover. He didn't palm the ball or hesitate to do so. Now if you had said the Iverson crossover move that became very popular and still is, I would agree.
Crime???? No way. Cheap shot and a penalty? Certainly I have no idea what the refrees were looking at to miss that shot. Hell, my neice got disqualified from one of her better events in the regional horse championships in NJ for excessive violence. Her crime, she used a crop and gave a horse who was playing sluggish a couple pops on the butt. Horse straightened up and she had a great ride.... only to be disqualified for excessive violence. Well hell, why even give them a crop if they can't use it. LOL
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! pussification of us all. if your kids dont like getting hit hard put em a diff sport. the kid who cried every time at fball practice is prob rich someplace with his nice job and nice suit. there are pleanty of other professions for kids to grow up and be/do. enroll the wuss in a non-checking club league if he like hockey so much. sorry for the rant but if you couldnt tell i really hate all of these rule changes, concussion this and that, your kid hit my kid etc. these are contact sports, the potential of getting hurt is there. play at your own risk. being hurt and playing with pain is part of it
Think that kid should crosscheck the parents! Hate what this world is coming to. I went to the chiropractor recently because my back was hurting. I can't believe the amount of times the insurance company has called asking why I went and trying to figure out who they can pin the blame on so someone else will have to pay. It's freaking hockey people YOUR GONNA GET HIT!!! F'n deal with it or go play chess!!!!
Definitely a late hit worthy of 2 in the sin bin. Criminal charges you would think would be laughable, but they are in Mass where the liberal whiners rule. I would have been embarrassed if my parents pressed charges on anything like this.
I think it's so close, that if the officials didn't blow the whistle, it may not be a late hit, but it was a little high, but that is mainly because of the height difference, as much as anything. It didn't look that bad to me.... I posted it up on another forum just a little while ago... Curling may be the sport for him, that way he'll be able to be on the ice, but not get hurt, unless someone throws a stone at him... :D
