Good Day Everyone, I have been wanting to look at bowhunting predators but don't know how to get started. Any ideas?
Sure....get a 22-250 from any reputable firearms company. When it comes to predators (coyotes especially) I will take any advantage I can. I will only use a bow for predators if the opportunity arises while deer hunting.
I second Montec a 22-250 works great along with a .243 as well. I only shoot predators with my bow if I am in the turkey or deer stand.
I've got a savage model 116 22-250. It has killed a few coyotes. Pursuing coyotes with a bow isn't impossible but it's very hard to call them into those ranges. They usually know something is up by that time. I try to pop them when they get around the 100-200 yd mark.
Ruger 204. The 32 grain hornady vmax flies 4250fps smokin little round. Leaves a pin hole and disintegrates on entry. Leaves pelts in great shape.
Go out and start calling. Hunt them the same as with a gun and make mistakes. You'll probably want an electronic call and buddy to run it if you are going to be shooting a bow.
They're hard to get drawn on for sure. Like was mentioned you might need somebody to call for you so they aren't focused on you when they come in.
22-250 is a great round. I use my AR in 5.56/.223 for yotes. Very accurate, but not as accurate as a 22-250 bolt gun. The one real edge my AR has over a 22-250 is the ability to dump 40 rounds at yotes if I feel so inclined.....
One of my favorite sets calls for an AR. If it's done right and everything works out you can get a double triple or more. Take some deer carcass scraps set them in a 5 gallon bucket with warm water (it pulls the blood out) let them freeze in the bucket. Now you have yourself a "baitcicle" to put in middle of a frozen hard pond. Let them get comfortable feeding on it. They will gnaw on it and pick at it but it will last awhile. When a few of them get on the ice to feed, post up with AR and let em have it. We dropped 3 once and a double twice. They totally do the Scooby-Doo trying to run.
Easier said than done as coyotes are much better at stealth than we are. Spring turkey season is when coyotes have their pups so they are extra careful and tougher to hunt. Pigs, set out corn or stake out water sources. Good broadheads with a well placed shot would be recommended, as someone already posted, be ready to run if you miss with a pig. Coyotes have a "live to hunt another day" strategy but can be tough. I haven't had much luck with electronic calls with coyotes but if you can pin a jack rabbit, then you have the scent to go with the call. Turkey decoys will bring them in the early morning.
I use the Primos Alpha Dogg Electronic Predator Calling System it works great, from coyotes, fox, bob cats, and coons. It brings them in close and fast.
