I've got bit by the predator bug. I've killed 4 yotes and destroyed one fox see below. I'm hunting with my 22.-250, but I don't want to keep destroying the foxes as I'd like to mount one. I can carry my .17, but 9 out of 10 times I'll see only yotes, so I want to make sure I make good on my chances. I'm thinking of buying a Mark III .22 scoped to shoot foxes with. Can I get accuracy out of this setup out to 50 yards? Is there a better option? I really don't want to carry two rifles, my sendero with the bull barrel weighs a ton as it is.
I can't sell the 250, my pops bought it for me and justify outfitting another rig for predators. Whats your thoughts on something in pistol region? 22mag?
I'd get a .22 mag if you must get a pistol. And expect some runners if your shooting foxes with them.
I use the .17 for foxes, one well placed shot between the eyes drops them. Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk 2
I have taken .22, .22 mag, .223, .243, and a 12 gauge out for predators and I stick to the basics anymore. If I am gonna have close shots its the 12 gauge and if I can have some distant shots it's the .223.
Use full metal jacket...thats all...little hole in and out. Don't shoot them in the head if you want a mount...much easier to hide a hole where there is longer hair.
.22 will definitely touch 50 yards. For some extra knockdown and shorter track jobs you may opt for the .22 wmr. Predator hunting is probably the most fun you can have in the woods outside of bowhunting. I can't wait to kill a yote, but I did tag a 30 lb bobcat back in January.
Wow.......30lbs is a monster cat. I took a 24lb tom a few years ago and when I brought the pelt in to be sealed the DEC officer said it was the biggest cat she had ever seen in her career. Is that common down in KS for them to get that big?
Also - If you think a high power .22 centerfire will do damage to a fox, you should see what it does to a cat. I shot my cat with 55gr vmax handloads at around 3100fps out of an AR and it damn near cut the thing in half.
