My mom had a stroke Thursday morning. She has left side neglect, but has moved her left hand and arm on command a couple of times. She's completely alert, and talkative. Her speech was stronger and much clearer this afternoon. She had a lot of visitors and spoke with them all. Cracking jokes. Her mind is just fine, and that is such a blessing. Still no movement on left side. CT today showed she has some swelling, but it's not bad. She has not complained about any pain at all. They put a cath in to give her meds to reduce the swelling. They said the meds should take care of it. She broker her leg pretty badly above the ankle when she fell. It's in a cast and they are going to do surgery to put some screws in Wednesday or Thursday. Baby steps, but no steps back yet. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
Also, you guys from BFZ remember my cousin Chase that is still dealing with cancer. He's 16, and not doing well... I will be surprised if he makes it to Christmas. His granddad, my uncle, has cancer also, and will begin treatments this week.... Keep them in your prayers also...
[h=3]bgkyarcher12 pointer[/h]6,6712 Aug 23, 2011BG They are keeping mom in ICU again tonight. They are trying to figure out why she's so drowsy. Ran an EEG this afternoon and there was no change from Thursday, a good thing. Also ran a CT but haven't gotten the results yet. She's still alert and talking etc. No cognitive problems at all. We're very lucky there. They decided to hold off on surgery for her leg. It's immobilized, so it could mend on its own. If not, they can do surgery later. Doc wants to get her stroke symptoms managed better. Daddy is doing great, very relieved to see how he's reacted. Things could be so much worse. So far, so good. Please keep mom and our friend Cheryl Thompson in your prayers. Cheryl has been there for almost 4 weeks, and has only been awake 3 times. Haven't talked to my uncle tonight yet, so don't know what their plan of attack on his cancer is... When it rains, it pours. I'll be glad to have my wife and daughter home Wednesday. They've been in S. Africa on mission trip for the last 10 days.... Having them home will help. Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers.
Just spoke with my uncle. He got good news. His cancer is in his esophagus, and in two lymph nodes in his necks. The doctor told him he was very confident in his treatment.... He must be very confident, because they just don't say that. He's looking at 6 weeks of mild radiation, 5 days a week, and chemo once a week. Surgery to remove what is left of the tumor and take out the lymph nodes after that, and then a couple more chemo treatments. The doctor said he should be good to go after that. His form of cancer is very treatable, and the doctor is quite confident. Nice to get good news...
Got good news today. Swelling is reduced. They cut her meds by 25% and are introducing a stimulant to cut back on her drowsiness. Plan to move to private room tomorrow and begin more PT. 1 week in and we are in pretty positive position. Thank you God. Thank you everyone for your prayers and support.
