So we had a line of pretty nasty storms blow through yesterday morning and destroy a bunch of stuff. Trees down all over the place, stop lights out, etc. Close to 1 million people were without power in the Chicago metro area which is something like the 3rd or 4th worst outage in history for these parts. As of this morning there's still close to 400,000 people without power including yours truly, and I believe Mike is still without power as well. Worked out and showered at the gym last night, then spent the night on the futon in my basement where it's nice and cool. Got some good book reading in anyways. :D Going to be another 1-2 days without power they're saying. Already emptied the fridge and freezer, but still have stuff in the chest freezer. So far it's holding up alright, but it may be making a trip to the office soon to join the rest of the dead deer in our freezer here. It's like camping, only at my house instead of in a tent.
You're pretty resilient for a famous person. Hope the power comes back on soon. Same storms came through Michigan, but the worst of it missed my area. Lots of people without power, but my neighborhood survived.
same up here, at least for a while... mine came back on about 1930 last night. had to crawl in a neighbors (D34) 2nd story window last night to get him in the house (thanks to the trash can!!!)... couldnt open the garage door and he didnt have his keys with him. ton of people not coming to work today cause they are manning their sump pumps and icing their coolers. i feel bad for them!
Thankfully it didn't rain too much b/c the backup battery for my sump is dead. My 125 gallon salt water tank isn't looking too good either. I put some fresh water in it a couple times and the fish are still alive, but I need to a battery powered aerator in there before they all croak. Or I can just borrow the generator from work for awhile. :D Isaiah - I had that same issue @ my house the first time my power went out. Keys were inside and my garage door opener didn't do me any good. Had to drive 1/2 hour to a friend's house to get my spare set of keys to get in. Doh!
I wish we would lose our power. I want to use our new generator transfer switch. Almost guaranteed we won't lose power for the next 20 years now that I spent the money and time to install it.
We had a tree blown down in our yard and a couple in my buddies yard. And it rained for 3-4 hours realy hard for the first time in a while.
When I lived in Maryland we were without power one hour short of 7 full days. Then I remember the ice storm they had here in Upstate NY and in Ontario a few years ago. There were areas without power for 3 weeks. My buddy was the restoration manager for Niagra Mohawk Power at the time. They had to replace 11,000 distribution poles the ice heavy lines and taken down.
Ah, the power outage. Our last good power outage was during that big blizzard which didn't amount to much for a lot of people but hammered us. 70+ mph winds blew a roof off a building and took out some powerlines. There was so much snow Kendall drove for two hours trying to get home and just ended up stuck in a drift for awhile. (he went back into town after he was pulled from the drift) So I was in a drafty 130 year old house with no power. (no furnace) I fired up the kerosene heater and then ate the last of the ice cream. (because you know.. it might melt! Putting it outside in a snow drift was out of the question because... um... wild animals! yeah) When the winds finally died down the next day I dragged a genny out and hooked it up to the furnace. By then you could definitely see your breath in the about half the house. That was awesome. 'cept for K being stuck in a snow drift. We had a big ice storm a couple years back that took the power out for days. It was during the second shotgun season, so I went out and killed a deer. Beat staying at home. You really need to get a generator!
This isn't really outage related but the company I work for constantly catches hell due to the continuing rate increases. What they don't seem to realize is the money for all these " environmental regulations" has to come from somewhere. Anyway, I don't mind when we lose power because it hasn't been longer than a day, yet. Probably wouldn't feel that way if it was more than a couple days. I feel for you guys.
Start of Day 3 of the Camping At Home Adventure of 2011. According to the power company I'm scheduled to be back online by tomorrow at midnight. At least it was nice and cool out last night. Popped the windows open and was serenaded by the sounds of generators running throughout the neighborhood as I slept. Got a generator hooked up to keep the fridge, chest freezer and fish tank running for now. At least my power bill won't be quite as high this month. :D
