Maybe Political Correctness is just speaking the Truth in Love. Sometimes what we we say is truthful but we choose poor ways or wrong times to speak or it is so obvious that it may be better left un-said. If truth itself changes... its not really truth. If truth changes us in some way for the better... then someone has been successful in their approach. If truth tears someone down for no apparent reason... its just plain mean. But at the same time, if truth is veiled to avoid offending someone and they are allowed to remain in their pain, then everyone loses. Its kind of an art form that some people master and others muff.
Most people only care about political correctness when it directly affects them. That is a fact. The word "retard" is a great example. For all those not offended by the word, I bet that would change if you had a child with down syndrome. The whole "nothing bothers me" thing doesn't fly. To me, that says I don't care what offends YOU. That is not my business to say. I have never lived a day in another man's shoes.
You must be one of those guys that doesn't care for PC at all and nothing said bothers you. I prefer to think he may be mentally challenged for not making that connection.
Would you say that Politically Correctness offends you? We all need bigger hearts & thicker skin. I think that the real reason for the rise of PC-ness is due to one simple fact. It's easier to regulate what someone says than how someone feels. Plain and simple. Kind of like it's easier to tax those that have money than it is to help those without to earn more (or tax those with instead of changing how they feel about giving). In interest of full disclosure, one of my sisters is severely mentally disabled. Everyone handles things different. I think it was harder on my older siblings than me, I was the youngest and thought it was weird that everyone else didn't have a retarded sister. We are wired different. I somehow understood that comments about my sister were rooted not in her disability, but in the ignorance (I don't mean this in a demeaning way), or fear of the person speaking. The real problem in my eyes is how much weight we give to what others say or think. "Pro" endorsements, NBC contributers, focus groups, Congress, religious leaders, movie stars..... we are conditioned to care. That's why everyone is so sensitive.
I heard a quote once: "If we only knew how little people thought of us, we wouldn't care so much what they thought."
Gotta love the irony in guys swearing at a god they swear doesn't exist. There's a fine line most with common sense will tread on... Problem, as with everything in life, is that people will go to both extremes. You shouldn't speak your mind freely without repercussions but you shouldn't be offended by every little comment and blame society on an individuals choices either. PC wouldn't be an issue if idiots had common sense, but that just isn't possible.
It is not irony when it is used as an example of political incorrectness. Besides it is not swearing at god it is asking/telling god to condemn something to hell. It is using god's name in vain. I don't know that I have ever sworn that god doesn't exist either.
I have never claimed the nonexistence of a god. But I do agree with this...and the part about extremes.
This is a pretty good point. Not sure I could write it up any better. Personally I am not offended by much, as I don't have close ties to many of the hot button issues. I know sometimes I use phrases that some may find offensive, but I don't do so in regards to targeting a specific person or group. That's where the common sense part comes in to know if someone was truly being derrogatory, or just using a phrase to describe something.
Speaking of PC, I was at a grocery store yesterday and by the time I got close to the front of the line at the checkout - I thought how nice it would be that along with an express lane, there should be a senior citizens lane and that's the only one those people are allowed to use. I see no downside whatsover to this.
I still do not believe that is being politically correct. I think that is still an example of someone saying something stupid and not being tactful.
Mental retardation is a proper medical term. So using "There are classes for the metally retarded children in our elementary school", shouldn't be taken as offensive. Using 'challenged' to get away from 'retarded' only makes 'retarded' a more villified word... which is silly. Sure, 'retard' is a deragatory term but that doesn't mean we need to steer clear of using mentally retarded. 'Man-caused disasters' for 'terrorist attacks'... and 'undocumented workers' instead of 'illegal aliens' are my two biggest PC peeves.
So being considerate and respectful to the people around me gives me the label of “wuss”? Darn I guess I am a “wuss” then…. Shucks I guess I will continue to have friendships and live a drama free life.
A lot of people on here have said that when people are not Politically Correct it does not effect/offend them..... So would it effect/offend you TO BE Politically Correct? If it is not a big deal then why not do it?
